I have just started a new build and I dont know what processor to get! Should i go all out and buy the Intel Quadro or just stick with a high end Dual Core. Are the Quadros worth the money?

Go with dual-core for now. Not enough applications that support multi-core processors. By the time they become widely available, your very expensive quad-core will be out of date.

Very true. They can sometimes even be slower than thier same MHz clocked dual core counterparts because of this fact. Stay clear of quad cores for a good year at least.

Isn't the quad Q6600 coming down in price in April? To around £320?

should be dropping to something like that, i've only read q2 so not sure of the april estimate and also takes a while for prices to trickle down as old stocks that cost more need to be sold.

but even at £320 2 cores will mostly go completely wasted, and often 3 cores.

one of, if not the only game that can use all 4 cores is supreme commander, and framerates are very cpu limited, dual/quad core makes like 5fps difference, ok its relatively large as we're talking like 40 up to 45fps, but in a game like that you're hard pushed to notice anything after you get to 25/30fps. not to mention thats on stock cpu speeds, if you whack a 6600+ up to 3.6Ghz its a different ballgame again.

i doubt you will find a game in the next two years(thinking non rts really) where both cores on a duallie are actually using 100% cpu power. by then quad core will be available at £100 in newer better chips with ddr3 and holodecks, ok, maybe not holodecks.

Not unless you encode video or edit etc...

for gaming and general usage its not the time for quad due to the high price.

Tend to agree, Quad cores are still a nice touch but not worth it atm.

Proberly be the wiser to get a decent E6600 rigg and enjoy 2007, then fall 07 we get AMDS new quad cores, early 08 we get Intels newer chips and DDR3+

I got this thread too late I think before you spend your money.

I am biased, the other way, hear me out ;)

Quad prices will come down in time, but maybe not by such a large margin as we hope. BUT, by then my QuadFX will be.. just a few tenners cheaper than when I bought it....but Dual-Core will be lame and won't be attractive at all, even on the 2nd-hand market... so what was the best investment in reality?

Subtract the total cost of your Dual-core from the premium over a quad, then add the performance value of the quad into the equation that you could enjoy NOW.

At stock setting (how quaint), some Dual-core benchies may nudge ahead of a stock quaddie, but who the heck buys a quaddie to run it stock

The OC'd quaddie stomps all over all Dual-core in everything.
I play games at the same framerates as any Dual core, but finish way quicker on 3D apps, video encoding (TPMG using all 4 cores 100% is beautiful to see) and unzipping/unraring files and generally doing lotsa heavy-cpu things at once.

Don't waste your dosh, it's not that cut-and-dry

Tis the issue people are getting £100 E4300s and a simple overclock is outpacing Quadcore setups....

Even the E6600 is just a good rounded bang for buck cpu, its performance is barely 10-20fps slower then a quadcore anyhow.

Id agree with Q3 launch for AMDS quadcores and the fact they will not be affordable (there gonna be like Intels quadcore prices now) its proberly the wiser to get cheap CD2 and overclock or just an E6600 and if anything come this fall/early 08 then decide to goto Quadcore ;)

Tis my plan anyhow:)
