Been offered a Road Legal RAM 170cc Quad for throw away money.

This quad is taxed & MOT'd for another 5 months and has all documents present, the fairings could do with being painted but that's no problem for the guys at the bodyshop I use.

Thinking of using it off road, and for popping to the shops etc just a bit of fun really.

Are they cheap to insure? And worth getting or not?

Thanks

Get a quote online for an idea, you can find out for yourself in minutes.

Personally I don't find quads very exciting... they're crap on the road and not all that amazing off it in my experience. They're certainally pretty ridiculous for 'popping to the shops'. Would rather have a dirt bike for messing about on or off road.

Insurance wise they are classed as small cars and terrible things on the road, many insurers will not insure them so could be expensive. Worst of both worlds comparing bike and car. You get wet if it rains, can't filter, the handling is dire and everyone will think you look a plonker riding it on the roads.

Pretty much everyone I've ever seen riding a quad on the road has been acting like a bit of a tool so if that's a common issue and view then potentially there's that stigma there if that might bother you. I've got no doubt there are decent quad riders out there who use them on the roads but I haven't seen any to comment on yet.

As for quad bikes on the road, they're not very refined and not particularly comfortable either plus as mentioned you've got neither the benefits of a car nor of a motorbike. Quads can be a lot of fun but I don't know if a quad designed for road use is going to be all that good off it, you'll probably need to change the tyres at the very least.

I see the same bloke driving through town presumably to work everyday on a quad, it makes loads of noise and he looks like an utter plonker on a quad wearing a suit :D

There is a fat 23 stone mid 30's bloke that speeds up and down our street on a yellow quad.
God he looks a nob.

I would love a go on one, but where the hell would you keep it at night? It wouldn't fit through a normal sized side gate, and it's too easy to nick if you just leave it on the drive.

I could put it in my garage.......

Cheap to insure and to run.

An engineer where I use to work had one. Cost him ~£10 a fortnight to get back and forwards to work (couple miles there and back on B roads)

Granted he looked a bit of a ***, but he loved it and didn't care.

Wow, thats a whole 22mpg.

Had he considered saving money on fuel by using, say, a Range Rover instead for his commute?

I used Quads a few time...but always off road.....sand dunes in Kenya being the most fun I ever had on a quad bike.....There a few around town where I live and 90% of the time they are driven but muppets....last week one was pulling wheelies behind me.....

Great off road....pointless on road

Last time I used them off road was in the deserts in Tunisia, my aim to get muddy here tho and obviously the fast that it's road legal means I can drive it there and back without the need for a trailer or van.

Fantastic for getting about if you're a hill farmer (invaluable actually as they can get to so many more places than a landrover), and racing quads are great fun if you have some land. However, all are horrible on road, thirsty compared to a normal bike, and make you look like a fool if driven around town.
