Quake 3 or Quake Live?

I've got a Netbook I'm installing games on to and I know that Quake 3 runs very well on it but I'm out of touch with Quake!

Which is the best version to install? I do already have Quake 3 Arena and Team Arena on my steam account and tbh I don't really want to start paying for Quake Live premium but if no ones playing the normal Steam version any more I may have to :(

Also is there some sort of guide to installing all the updates etc. if Quake 3 (Steam) is the way to go..

Quake Live for sure. I played Quake 3 for about 7 years and wish the original was still about with mods like RA3, but times have changed and Quake Live is the way to go if you want some good competition and more players.

Sounds like Quake Live might be the way to go then, will I need premium to get the most out of it or will the free standard version be OK?

Free is fine to kill some time. I've never felt the need to go pro, don't play it enough, the netbook experience probably won't warrant any more than free IMO

Yeah your probably right, The netbook is a bit of a project I bought back from the dead and upgraded it a bit, put in a 128GB Crucial M4 SSD and is really quite nippy now!

Will I miss out on some maps and modes on the free version?

Yeah, and creating matches and stuff. Still excellent stuff in there for free though. Plenty to do in free, I sometimes jump on for insta rail matches. Usually a good few public CTF, DM and TDMs going on too. if you know anyone with Pro they can invite you to Pro content matches IIRC

Just finished downloading and had a quick game, runs really well :)

Thanks for the tips brennen..

Quake Live is just a nerfed version of Quake 3 that has been altered to make it easier to play for the xbox generation (IE people who won't put time and effort into something to get good and develop their skill). So what do they do? Quit or download a hack.

Proper Q3 is still better but unfortunately it has died off in favour of 'free' Quake Live and other more up to date games like the battlefield franchise and MOH series. It also suffered badly with cheaters, and still does as Evenbalance stopped supporting PB for Q3 in around 2006, not that PB was much use but at least it was a little bit of a deterrent! Servers rely on good admins to catch the hackers but most dont have them as it is very time consuming. Also, ID have turned off the master servers so really you can only play if you know where to go and how to set Q3 up for the particular point release and mod that a server is using. But it can be done if you try

I have played Q3 since it was released on PC in late 1999, and can honestly say it was well ahead of it's time, and even by todays standards the physics and speed of the game are sublime. ;)

Quake Live does a part decent job of emulating real Q3 for the likes of me but I think the overall design brief was that it was never supposed to be Q3. But many 'proper Q3' fans such as myself find it near impossible to tolerate and I personally prefer not to play it if I have the choice! :p

Indeed I have started to play something else now rather than play QL! Tribes Ascend which is actually very good - but all of the tribes 1 players are spitting blood over it because its not 'proper tribes'! I tell you what, some people are just too set in their ways! :p

Also, as the QL community realised fast - theres one big problem with games like Quake, and thats the fact that they are so easy to hack at. As with Q3 before it, QL is rife with cheaters as it is the perfect type of game to exploit wallhacks and aimbots, and unfortunately there are whole communities writing and selling such hacks. PB is next to useless against a custom code C++ hack, just as it has always been to be honest.

Unfortunately until the gaming community accept that intrusive anti cheat software is the only way to eradicate cheaters I dont think it is something that will ever be fixed. I personally dont understand why people do it, but I bet there are forum members reading this right now that play QL and cheat. Yes it really is that prolific. That's just the sad truth of it :(

However, I have to say that playing Tribes Ascend has been a breath of fresh air and I havent seen any cheaters yet. I heard it was too hard to code for because of all of the variables involved and most of the weapons are not hitscan. I have also heard that the few who do cheat get caught out pretty quickly as it's super obvious - unlike Quake hacks that incorporate humanised aiming/tracking, user defined accuracy (so its not so obvious) and smart wallhacks etc. Wallhacks are next to useless in Tribes as all the maps are open outside spaces with only small areas of indoor rooms and as mentioned only a few weapons are hitscan.

I run my own Q3 server, running the Threewave mod but its only populated by the hardcore few who I have known online for years. Such a shame really because QL will never ever be as good as proper Q3 and its associated mods (OSP, CPMA, Threewave, RA3, Defrag etc etc). But maybe, just maybe, I am a wee bit biased on that subject :p

If anyone wants to try a bit of Q3 Threewave CTFS, my server is public so feel free to connect. You will need Q3 on point release 1.32 and Threewave 1.7. :)

There are other Q3 servers about, and if you use a site like Gametracker you can get a look at the point release (server protocol) and mod they use. Maybe I am too set in my ways and QL is really the way forward, but I am actually liking the challenge of Tribes at the moment, and its free to play! :D

As for Q3 and TA on steam, check the game forums in Steam as there are loads of posts with how to guides.

Cheers

How different are QL and Q3, and in what ways?

I know this is a very old post but are you still playing by any chance?

Well there's a name from the past - how are you?

Im still gaming but not really on PC anymore. I drop in to QL now and again to see some of my old Q3 buddies. I finally closed my CTFS server down a couple of years ago as nobody was using it.

Tried Quake Campions for a bit but dropped it. Lobbies and load screens along with iffy hit reg left a bad taste in the mouth.

How about you?

Left a bad taste in a lots of people's mouths but the devs don't seem to really appreciate it :(

Last time I played the netcode was hideous and seemed to let people go several seconds out of sync at times and I really just wanted to say jump in for some FFA and play a few maps on rotation uninterrupted heh.

I really wanted to like it and didn't even mind the gameplay changes, infact could be fun, but the lack of fluid responsiveness compared to old and all the lobby stuff just left me cold and sadly the overall feel and netcode seemed to be more intrinsic issues of the engine chosen rather than something easily fixed.

Hi, i'm well yourself? Put a post up a while ago on here asking if anyone still played quake and got no reply so thought it must be dead :(

Shame i used to love playing, took over my life for a bit lol. Is there many of the old faces on quake live?

Was contemplating installing it last night but wouldn't know where to begin files wise to get it the way i had it setup!

It still has a lot of potential though. Slow but things are improving. Instagib this month, 2v2 TDM in March and CTF coming in April at least.

Good illustration of Quake when you are in the zone - nothing else comes close - shame a few little things about QC don't let that quite work for me as it is.

Some of the guys from the xs4all server still play under their old alias. There is a server called skunc (or something like that) that they use.

But i have not seen or heard from most of the players I knew back in the ScB days. I think a lot of people moved on to other things.

I know the guys who used my server are still around on QL.

Theres lots of online help for QL in terms of setup. I just dont play it enough to bother. I pretty much use defaults with the odd tweak.
