Quake 3 or Quake Live?

Hello Prae, it's Demon from the ScB days. Saw Havok's username on another thread and replied, and he mentioned you'd posted here so thought I'd reply too. Been a long time, hope you are well and all that. :)

Blimey, more Quakers in here than a town in Pennsylvania!! :)

How you doing Demon? Im good thanks - lots has changed since those days! Funny how you remember things in life, as soon as I saw your post I instantly remembered playing 1v1 with you on some empty FFA server years ago. We played dm16.

Must be knocking on 15 years ago.

Are you still gaming? Im a console peasant now. PS4 and xbox 1x. Pretty much gave up PC gaming after they ruined Tribes Ascend a few years ago. Hands down one of the best online skill based shooters going but Hi-Rez sold out for a microtransactions model in Smite and left TA to die. Boooooooo. Lol. I do really miss it though.

But I no longer have as much time to invest in gaming so consoles suit my needs. Plus the sofa is more comfy than my 16 year old office chair :p

Hope life has treated you well and if you do any gaming on console, then it would be good to catch up.

Might even dust off the mouse and get on QL :p

Yeah I'm alright thanks, don't really game that much now though - I find I don't have the time I had when I was younger, plus most modern releases hold no interest for me. Last time I did any online gaming properly was around 2007-2011 with Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead on PC, a few of us played those two (Lucifer, Perish, Turk and my brother). I didn't really get on with QL, which is a shame as that has effectively replaced Q3 for good.

Don't have a PS4 or XB1 I'm afraid, but I might pick one up down the line if I think I will actually use it. :)

Yeah - i went from having 20-30hrs a week for gaming down to about 2hrs a week if Im very lucky.

QL never appealed to me either really. But I play it every now and again now and I guess its not all that bad. Its more quake than the new Quake Champions.

I missed the l4d craze. Never really bothered with TF2 either. Went through a counterstrike phase though. Still bob in to CSGO every now and again.

Im enjoying my single player games a lot though, so I play online less and less........

QL isn't bad, it's just not as good as Q3 in some aspects (mainly due to lack of mods I guess, but also I remember the community of players being better back in the day... although I look back at that period of time fondly, therefore I'm probably biased). L4D was a good laugh but only if you could get enough friends together to make a group, otherwise it's not worth the bother in my experience. TF2 I enjoyed when it was simple to pick up and play, maps were well designed and the gameplay was balanced. Unfortunately they've added so much (quite frankly unneccessary) content that it's downright confusing in my opinion. Tried it a few months ago to see what had changed after a few years, didn't have a clue what was going on anymore. Shame really.

The odd single player game is all I do at the moment, and even then it might only be once or twice a week. Needless to say I haven't bothered upgrading the PC in a while. ;)

but also I remember the community of players being better back in the day...

Its become a bit more toxic - possibly somewhat due to the change in how people play i.e. less community servers, etc. and also a lot of newer players are very much about the meta and less skilled generally in terms of aim and reaction times, etc. and all about the stack - gameplay become much more about the numbers - beyond just like timing the top tier power ups.

Honestly I'm not sure the community has really changed. I like to think of the good old days as being better but there was just as much trash talking and negativity. Maybe it is just a generational thing - each generation thinks theirs is the best and laments the 'youth of today'. Like with most things there are good and bad. Some elements of the Tribes Ascend community were total cancer (elitist trash talkers). Yet others were awesome and helpful. Having said that, I do feel there is an increased level of immaturity online bit that is probably because Im getting older! :p Might also be that gaming is now more accessible to younger players who are less able to regulate their emotions and behaviour.

I very much see game evolution mirror our general consumerism. Everything has to be right now. Players cant get owned and have to spend time improving anymore, its bad for business. They have to be able to hold their own from the get go, so game mechanics are such that skill elements are designed out. If anything, for me at least, it has made a lot of modern games seem shallow and superficial.

In terms of meta you can't blame players for rolling with the stack if it works. If anything its perhaps just an evolution and if the game mechanics encourage / reward it then the fault lies with the game balance rather than the community. But I agree, its less appealing.

I purchased TF2 loved it and then went on to runr it for me.

Dunno I played a lot on xs4all servers and the NA equivalent that I can't remember the name of right now, etc. for Quake 3 very rarely encountered anything other than the occasional person who'd join with a instant snapping aimbot, kill everyone, make a derisive comment and leave - never encountered real toxicity in that community until Quake Live - some of the stuff I encountered while playing CA in QL was incredibly toxic.

To some degree it has changed. Sure trash talk still happens today but I’m seeing less of it due to all the streamers and how quickly you can be exposed versus the old days where there was no recording.

Fair comments. Did you play as Rroff in xs4all or a different tag? I found Tribes a far more elitist and toxic environment than quake 3 ever was to be fair, but it was only from certain quarters. Id say the majority of players were decent and just wanting to play and have fun - but the learning curve was huge. In many respects the toxic comments came from new players getting owned because they didnt know how to play. Used to be the same in q3 as I recall.

If anything I find the console environment worse - particularly on CoD. Lawbreakers can be pretty terrible too. Thankfully players are easily muted :)

Played as a few different names but mostly Rroff. Yeah Tribes could be quite toxic - I only dipped into it now and again though aside from a couple of months when Tribes 2 was released.

Played quake,2,3 for thousand of hours and got burnt out with FPS giving me mid rsi pain. But I did get back into ql a bit, not as fun as q3 just more populated.

Quite liked warsow but again not many people playing, but I do enjoy it Vs bots. Quake 1 is still very active.

Warsow was always very Marmite - personally I always felt like my time would be better spent playing Quake 2/3 instead heh.

It's a real shame Quake Champions is nothing but a spam fest nowadays. If you're good at spamming which most are, you'll win. That is if you can find health bubbles before your death.

I've been having a few games on QL for old times sake, hoping to get into QC though once I get my graphics card, I've only played instagib freezetag as rail used to be my fav weapon back in the day, if I've learnt one thing though its that I'm now too old and shockingly bad after many many many years without so much as touching a game, I couldn't hit an elephant if it was 2 feet away from me!

It does come back to you, instagib is probably not the best idea until you have got back some of the old memory muscle. Map control is key in normal quake as much as aim.

Good luck. You'll likely not enjoy constantly trying to find health bubbles that you can rarely find. Along with the Rockets and Super Nail Gun spam.

Yeh that doesn't sound too fun maybe I should look at other games, in the meantime I'll keep getting my butt handed to me in QL :)

@ScBHavoK
