Quake 4 problems...

I'm running Windows Vista, E6750 and a 320mb 8800GTS. Latest drivers and patch.

Quake 4 looks absolutely fugly. Everything in menu is set on high @ 1680x1050. The shaders seem to be disabled, so it's all raw textures. Has anyone had this problem, and have they fixed it?

Set it all to defaults again and work your way up. If you manaully entered your screen res into the cfg file the in game settings often cease to be correct.

Why on high, iirc q4's best setting is ultra, and I played it at that with my 6800GS.

(What I'm saying: Try ultra)

I've fixed. Turns out ambient lighting was turned on!

Snowdog: I honestly can't tell any difference between high and ultra. I guess ultra is a little sharper?

Hurrah for brainless shooting action!:

That's more like it! Quake 4 is NOT an ugly game. It has its own unique graphical style, inherent from the Doom 3 engine, and is a ruddy good blast! Enjoy!

I think a lot of people have assumed ultra just has no compression on the textures. If I remember correctly though, Ultra adds dynamic shadows to your flashlight.

The Doom engine is all about lighting, looks like stale vomit without it.

Hence I love doom 3 and quake 4, I usually find lightning one of the most important things in games :).
Also one of the few games that actually likes p4's and also likes nvidia's more as ati's and since im on netburst & old nvidia :) .
Runs very nice on ultra on 1280x1024 :).

Shame most stuff is directx these days, my gfx cars starts being carp @ shader 3.0 :(.

I'm running it on ultra now though. :D The lighting does look better and the whole game feels less "static." Just got to the bit where you're Stroggified, really cool.
