Got so excited when i heard they were announcing a new quake. They even pre-face with 'fast paced skillful blah etc' and then announce a class based shooter? :| What a kick in the balls to hardcore quake fans :|
I think a new game has potential. They are stuck between a rock and a hard place really. If they release a game that is the same as previous titles in terms of gameplay they will be dragged over the coals for lack of originality and new features.
If they attempt to create something different but inside the Quake theme, they will be lambasted for it "not being Quake".
Personally, having played another game that uses specific classes and roles for some time now, I think it adds more skill to a skill based shooter. Tactics are more complex for a start. Mastering multiple classes requires more skill too. Alongside that, teamwork has to be closer and more coordinated. If they are targeting esports with this new title, I can imagine it will have a high skill ceiling which is something missing from a lot of modern releases.
I am probably what you would term a die hard Quake fan, but I still accept that the original gameplay can be added to. I am interested to see where they take this new game. I hope to see some brilliant map designs and good weapon balance along with Quake 3 / 4 movement physics. The crouch slide in Q4 was so underrated. Watching top tier duellers move around a map using crouch slide was mesmerising

Let us also not forget Q3 CPMA or even DeFRaG! I think arena style gunplay an physics under the umberella of team based tactical play will be good fun. It seems they are targeting the PC audience with this title, so fingers crossed we will see a worthy addition to the Quake series.
Also, there is nothing stopping them tipping their hat to the original Quake by adding an "original mode" to the new title. Would be fairly easy really. A few server flags and a little bit of code and boom, you have Quakeworld FFA!
