Seems like the Demon Quake3 Servers have been shutdown for the last time.

This leaves almost no public UK Q3 servers left, the ones left are private rented as far as I am aware.

I guess this is probably the end of Q3 now. It's been a good 8 years and I expect now it'll be only the real hardcore still playing just like Q1 now.

Anyone else still playing?

ive been back thgrough the Q3 phase a while ago this year, but i suspect i'll be back (as long their are servers to play on)

I'm currently still playing, problem is I only really want to play insta-unlagged 1v1, and there are rarely anyone in the two severs currently up :(

I know, when you manage find a decent server it gets full within minutes. Shame, great game.

It may just result in the scene becoming more European. This is what has happened in Quakeworld ('Q1'). Most clans now are multinational with a lot of games taking place in central locations like Denmark where people from most nations ping under 50. In some ways the QW scene has actually got less hardcore in recent times thanks to projects like nQuake making it easy for people to get started with Quake, newbie tournaments and central resources like www.quakeworld.nu

I may be wrong but last time I checked I think the demon servers weren't even running the latest Q3 patch (1.32) anyway?

Yep. I find to get the most out of the currently online servers I have to have two installations of Q3, one running 1.31 final and one running 1.32.

Roll on Quake Zero :)

from what I have found it sounds crap, game that runs in web browser ?
We forgot to mention this on Friday night but during the big QuakeCon press event it was revealed that id Software is forming a second dev team that will first work on what they are calling Quake Zero. "Zero" in this case means "free" as they are going to develop a free version of Quake 3 Arena that will run via a web browser. The second team will also develop an all new game in the Quake series that will use the id Tech 5 graphics engine that's also being used for their next game Rage.

Yeah, they've confirmed the web browser will just be to launch the game, as opposed to actually running in it like a flash type thing.
Don't see how launching from a web browser is any easier than a normal menu system personally, but I suppose some people might be more comfortable with it.

Well its probably because if you launch it via your browser you HAVE to visit the website, which will probably be plastered with adverts. You get the idea...

Yeah I've got this setup. I think the Demon servers orginally just stayed on 1.31 cos all the Punkbuster stuff and incompatibilities etc (a few years ago) 1.31 was nice and straightforward. All of the 1.32 serves I have played on have PB disabled now anyway.

The QW servers I have played on in the last couple of years have been loaded with pros. Just absolutely slaughtered.
