Quantum computing

If the processors will be that fast, how will they bring out different price ranged ones if it makes no difference in speed in any applications? Why would you need anything quicker than their lowest price one?

It's like having a car that does 200mph and one that does 300mph, but you can only drive 70mph.

Because having the speed there will drive developers to produce software that can take advantage of it, thus increasing the need for faster hardware, sort of snowballs really :)

Plus this sort of hardware IS needed, just because most people travel at 70 doesn't mean that racedrivers on a track need to, if you get my analogy :)

My CPU feels very old right now.

This will be a massive breakthrough technology wise for research leaders and I'm pretty sure there will be a lot of R&D towards it but I don't see it being in our homes any time soon. Maybe when I'm 30.

The past 12 months have been pretty epic for breakthroughs in this field. First it was quantum entanglement of data and now it's quantum processing.

Another 10 years and we will be there TBH! Our grand kids will look up our era on their eyeball encyclopaedias and laugh at how we measured stuff in Gigabytes and Megahertz!

All while boshing around in space :p

I'm certainly far more interested in what software developers will come up with to make use of all this new power. At the end of the day I couldn't give a monkeys what's driving my computer, I care what I can do with it. Would love to see something like in Gamer.. walk through some sort of 360 holographic screen, big bean bag, controlling things with movement. Like Kinect but on mega mega quantum steroids :D

Hmmm interesting. Thing is a true quantum computer couldnt have a speed rating as in our universe/dimension it would give the answer to any equation instantly, so it's computational speed is always infinate (0-1 simulationously means no processing time as it's always both)

The problem is taking it's output and displaying it, putting this instant info into a useable form that we can interpret. I guess in a way similar to a normal pc, your slowed by the input/output, but the actual mathematical processing would be instant.

sweet no loading times on maps then :D

Sadly will unlikely ever be available for home used. Cryogenic cooling is needed to mainatin the environment these things operate in, as is rather expensive superconducting materials. The method by which the operate is completely different to "binary" computing as well, so you wont be running windows on it :p

They will provide huge breakthroughs in thoeretical physics, medicine, astrophysics and cosmological modelling though. To name a few i would guess.

I think there is a world market for maybe five quantum computers. :p
