Quantum computing

I think there is a world market for maybe five quantum computers. :p

Interestingly there's no evidence he ever said that :p

But in all seriousness, these things will be brilliant, but not for home use. Our department at sussex university has been working on the process by which the ions are trapped for the qubits to be "made". Liquid hydrogen has to be used to get the materials to superconduct, and this temperature needs to be maintained throughout the process.

The only way these will be for home use is if you can find a superconductor that operates at reasonable temperatures.

maybe the computational power provided by these iterations of quantum processors will allow for the research and development of newer synthetic elements capable of such a feat :p

They will be in homes over time, it's inevitable and while right now the power is realised in research, it won't always be that way.

This is the whole point of future computing and how it's always been/will be :p I imagine with the research done by the first quantum computers new technologies will emerge making later quantum based computers smaller still and beyond maybe.

Hmmm interesting. Thing is a true quantum computer couldnt have a speed rating as in our universe/dimension it would give the answer to any equation instantly, so it's computational speed is always infinate (0-1 simulationously means no processing time as it's always both)

The problem is taking it's output and displaying it, putting this instant info into a useable form that we can interpret. I guess in a way similar to a normal pc, your slowed by the input/output, but the actual mathematical processing would be instant.

So I shouldn't buy an SSD then?

If these things will work stuff out instantly though.

1. Dragon NaturallySpeak
2. Ask quantum computer how to make cost-effective cooling for itself.
3. ???
4. Proft.

Problem?

Whilst I still struggle to understand these things, I believe that the power is only useful in certain circumstances....

... ie, quantum computing is only beneficial so long as you have algorithms that can be solved in a quantum way.

The main principle seems to be that they can quickly (!?) calculate all possible outcomes, and this allows more convential computing to discard those that aren't appropriate, rather then the quantum computer generating the end result.

I'm probably way off the mark - as mentioned, I have yet to see an simple explanation in 'traditional' language.

If these things require a cryogenic environment, could we end up in a situation where a select few machines exist and the end user at home only has a "screen" that sends instructions over the internet to the quantum computer in some company's basement somewhere and receives the result of the computation immediately?

Or that maybe each house has one built into it which you then access wherever you like in that house. It will control everything, from the oven to the fridge, blinds, air conditioning, a general 'smart' house. Bit like Holly on Red Dwarf :D

Someone has thought of a way around that!

Probably not work safe (unless you work in the "industry" or something but if you go to goo dot gl then forward slash vUJDQ

Well thats going to be down-right embarrassing if your mate asks to use your PC to check something.

I wonder if anyones make a laptop version to take dogging....?

Hmm, I suspect that no-ones ever pondered on that before actually....its not the usual sort of thing you'd find on Casemods.com or whatever. look at what procrastination has done to my mental state... :(

Yep, I killed that discussion I think. :o

but will it run crysis?

I joke, because this is the most possible future for computing

It will run all possible situational outcomes in Crysis in real time, thus making the AI unbeatable.

All hail our new quantum overlords!

God help us :)

"IQ of 6000? It has a six in it, but it's not 6,000". That'd be ace though. Being greeted back home by Holly.

Interesting, but what exactly is a quantum computer chip supposed to do? I understand the speed of calculation would make it an excellent code breaker, but what other practical applications are there?

Protein folding, weather simulation basically anything that involves complex mathematical algorithms.
