Morning all,

Just worked out my current commute to work (15 mile journey on an A road) is costing me 18.6mpg.

I have never bothered working this out before, but over the last year my car seems to have been using more fuel. I dont expect anything great however 18.6 seems quite low for a 60mph steady cruise?

What are other people getting out their cars just out of interest, is it something I need to look into?

It did surprise me when I worked it out as when looking at other cars to replace with (330i, scoobs etc.), I was wary about the potential low mpg these run at, seems that I could be better off getting one!

That figure isn't all that surprising for a 10 year old+ 2.5 V6, that said, it will greatly depend on your driving style, traffic, you tyres, pressures etc.

Given an oil change & new air filter 6 months ago. New tyres about 2 months ago. 80% of the time drive it like a saint, stuck behind traffic 50/60 miles an hour.

Guess I need to spec me an economical 330i or scoob or even focus ST?

My not so bright brother who was going to buy an estate a couple of weeks ago instead bought one of these.

He said he was getting about 16-18mpg on his work trips, (which was better than his old impreza) but he does have a very heavy foot.

Think I may need to get it looked at, or possibly look to service it again.

Does anyone have a guide for self servicing the V6 in a mondeo?

Thanks

I've never bothered to work out the mpg on mine, i know its not great. Generally I get about 270ish miles on a full tank depending how i drive, I tend to have a heavy foot. During the cold snap that figure droped even lower for a time.

in my mk2 v6 I also only got 18-19mpg in the same situations my 330i would return 23-24mpg.....so upgrading saved me money on fuel at least!

My commute is about 80/90miles per day and im not getting much better than 20mpg from my ST24.

edit: Thinking about it, I'll be surprised if its over 20mpg at all. Fortunatly, I car share and only drive 2 weeks out of every 4.

:eek: I knew they were a bit thirsty but for the performance you get that really is very poor. I'm getting ~28-29mpg from a 60 mile/day commute in a rather more powerful turbocharged car and I don't tend to drive particularly sedately. In fact my friend with his 400bhp MGZT gets better mileage than you on a run.

I thought it would be worse than a Type R when i questioned it a while ago..........

I have an ST24 and it DRINKS fuel :( and its had a recent FULL service

I do almost exclusively urban driving in my ST200, average is 24mpg. If you're 'working it out' as 18.6 then I would double check the sums too, my reading is from the trip computer.

Seems 18mpg is the going rate then! Nothing I should be worrying about there then.

I forgot to mention my car has decat, sports exhaust & secondaries removed / open. So that obviously doesnt help the economy.

Swear my dad says he gets 25+ in his.
He does drive like a an old man in it though :p

On my commute I drive at a steady pace, only on a Friday will I ever push on a bit to get home. I guess it depends on the condition of the engine / mods to the car.

v6 ghia x estate

so more mass to lug around, round town 26 mpg, round trip to bath monday 260 miles 37.7 mpg, often compare trip computer to brim filling and it is spot on.

steady cruise should get more than that... 30 Mpg out of my V6, sometimes peaking at 35mpg on long trips which is exactly the same as my current merc 190E and thats only a 2.0....Having said that my st 24 was mint, reguarly serviced and only 80K on the clock (purchased with 40..). UNfortunately it ended up trashed after losing it on some diesel...

My old Saab 900 turbo 16 was around 26mpg or less but thats old tech...and I drove it flat out everywhere (boost is addictive..)
