Quest 2 Facebook leak - XR2 chipset, 6gb RAM, "almost 4k display"

Quest renders at lower than the resolution of the screen, even in Link mode.
Quest also uses fixed foveated rendering which reduces the image quality at the edges of the screen for many native titles.
Quest has OLED pentile screens which have fewer subpixels than the Index's LCD screens that have RGB stripe.

So not really the same resolution in practice unfortunately. Though the black levels and colours are far better.

Which Quest 2 should improve on all these massively.

New higher resolution.
RGB stripe.
Reduced FFR.

Quest 2 is rendering over 21 million subpixels compared to 9 million on Quest 1, just under 14 million on the Index and around 11 million on Rift S.

Thinking of getting the Quest 2 but do you think I'll be too late to pre order? Will the games that I already own on the rift work with the Quest 2?

Quest 2 is still up for pre-order on Amazon so no you're ok for the moment. CV1 Rift / Rift S games will work on Quest 2 via the Link capability.

I am sensing the quest 2 (despite facebook account concerns) is going to be popular, I've had 3 people not remotely in to VR, but in to gaming all phoning and asking advice on the Quest 2.. I've been honest about the facebook account and that the Elite Strap (or wait for aftermarket) is a must and they've pre-ordered them..

Quest was popular. This is better and cheaper. Seems a foregone conclusion, especially if Covid winds up curbing social stuff again.

Only a few months ago, you'd struggle to buy a Quest for less than £500. Now you can buy a better version for £299.

Quite liked the look of this until I found out you need a Facebook account to use it. Wtf! I don’t have a Facebook account neither do I intend to get one so that rules me out.

You can just create one, set max privacy settings (so your name wont even appear in a search) and you're good to go. You know you don't actually have to use the social media aspect right?

Ars Technica have been really negative in their review of the Q2.

https://arstechnica.com/gaming/2020...he-299-oculus-quest-2-as-your-next-vr-system/

They made mistakes in it before, saying there were less IR emittors in the controllers, which was shown to be wrong. No one else has said they've experienced any issues with tracking apart from them. Overall, it seems like they hate the facebook account aspect (I can uunderstand that, even if I'm not that bothered myself), and from then on in, refused to give it any credit.

Quest 2 really is a game changer.
Looking forward to playing the simple games more than anything

Table tennis looks good

Eleven Table Tennis is probably one of the most realistic and immersive games on the Quest. Just don't try to lean on the table!

I hope though it gets a 90hz update, because you really do notice the 72hz refresh rate due to the fast ball movement.

I hate the Facebook requirement but can live with it I guess.

Does sound like it's a bit of mixed bag in terms of upgrades and I'm particularly disappointed they feel the controller tracking us marginally worse. The standard strap will undoubtedly be worse but at least it can be fixed by spending extra to get the elite strap.

Overall though given the £300 price tag, the way better optics and the massively improved chipset specs to me it's definitely worth the upgrade IMO.

Yeah the Facebook account thing is stupid, unfortunately harvesting user data is probably more profitable than the sale of the unit.

I'm kinda interested in VR (though I've got no idea if I'll actually like it - same as mechanical keyboards and ultrawide monitors, haha) ... partially because of things like Township Tale and I think the VR element might actually draw me into being social in a co-op or mmoy game again ... but when I eventually do build a decent computer I'll feel even more strapped for funds than I do now and so shelling out for something like a valve index will never happen even if stuff picks up again in the new year so is out unless I win the lotto (and I don't play so that'd be even harder to achieve, ha) ... things like this even if they don't have some of the technical excellence of an index are way more realistic and would at least let me find out how into VR I actually am at this point in technology ... buuuuut that facebook thing is such a no go, I don't use any social media (unless reddit counts and I've never posted a picture of myself or put my real name anywhere on it) ... and I've seen people say if you use a fake FB account then maybe you'll get locked out of your oculous stuff ... I guess you could make one, have no friends on it, and just set everything to mega-private, but it just feels like such a sketchy thing to make people do it sets off alarm bells in my head.

I’m not saying that it’s not a worthy upgrade but just FYI everything I’ve seen suggest the lenses are actually identical to those in the Quest. No bad thing as I think the Quest lenses are pretty good, but just pointing it out so you don’t expect something that isn’t there!

on the other hand I don’t think it has worse tracking, Ars is the only reviewer that mentioned any issues whatsoever on tracking... if anything there is now more room for tracking to improve over time as the chip is capable of running more complex algorithms and dedicating more resources.

I know the lenses themselves may be the same but the screen has a much higher resolution and the display is supposedly better. Should make the image sharper and further reduce screen door effect.

It's no longer OLED so blacks may potentially not be as good through.

Ah ok, optics traditionally refers to lenses so I assumed you were under the impression the lenses had been improved.

yes the visuals should be a substantial upgrade, even considering the potential drawbacks of lcd. Blacks may not be as big an issue as some suggest since they don’t fully switch off the oled pixels in quest anyway to avoid black smear so you aren’t getting “true black” even with the oled panel.
