Quest 2 Facebook leak - XR2 chipset, 6gb RAM, "almost 4k display"

Has anyone tried bigscreen cinema on a VR headset? Wondered how good it was.

I've used virtual cinemas (mainly SkyboxVR) on multiple headsets, but funnily enough the Go was the best due to the lightness, lenses and sharpness of the screen. 3D movies look amazing in VR.

Looks like October, as that's when the new rules around Facebook logins for new devices come in. If it wasn't for the forced Facebook account I would be buying this on release. As it is I'm going to wait until the dust settles and we see how Facebook handle account issues for VR devices.

Lol just thinking that, I've only had mine for 6 months! Annoyingly, I spent £80 on prescription lenses that I am guessing won't work on the 2 :(

If I get one I'll be keeping the old Quest so that my wife can use it as a Beat Saber machine. Probably not worth selling, and I tend to give my old hardware away anyway.

The point about prescription lenses is a good one. The lenses are bigger, and they seem to be recessed, so existing lenses won't work. However I have a feeling that the recess is to protect the lenses from being scratched by glasses so it may be more glasses friendly, making prescription lenses a nice to have, but not essential.

Ironically, if it wasn't for this whole facebook login thing souring the deal, this could even be a good enough device to replace all my existing VR headsets - Go, Quest and Index (depending on how good Oculus Link is on it).

Certainly it'll make a much better media player than the Go and the Quest, and the only reason I keep the Go is to watch 3D movies. The index is a terrible device for watching media due to the lens glare.

Refresh rate?

Is it going to use same lenses as Rift S? As they are the better ones AFAIK, since you get little/no glare like is supposed to be apparent on the Index. And things look clearer on the S than the Quest.

So, basically is it a good Rift S replacement or too early to tell?

Up to 120hz has been rumoured, but likely to be 90hz. Lenses are alleged to have a wider FOV, and three IPD settings.

If Oculus Link peforms better on this device it could be a good Rift S replacement. However PC headsets like the G2 or even the Index may have a sharper image than Quest 2 when linked to PC, as the feed isn't compressed. However the reduction in SDE over the original Quest and the Rift S could be huge.

Thanks

Sounds like Quest 2 will be the best option though, and hopefully cheaper.

If this device lands for £299/$299 then Facebook has effectively won the VR race. No-one can come anywhere near to producing a device with those specs, with inside-out tracking as good, and with a large, mature software library, at that price.

Maybe the only competitor could be a PSVR2, but I can't see Sony being able to compete with that spec at that price. Might force Sony to up their game, as otherwise PSVR will suffer as people migrate to Oculus.

I think this could be phenomenal, but I’d be confident making a bet that the G2 will still rule The roost for seated PCVR which is my main interest.

That's very true.

It also depends on the lenses, which are an uknown quantity on both the Quest 2 and the G2. (HP are apparently upgrading the G2 lenses, and reviewers haven't seen those yet).

But it's likely the G2 will be the king of seated VR for the forseeable future, partly because it's a direct connection and not a compressed video stream.

You want to get your orders/pre-orders in the second they go on sale. I remember what the quest 1 was like.
Selling for silly money on ebay from those who buy loads to cash in.

The 128gb versions were less popular and easier to get hold of. The 256b Rift 2 would probably be same.

Wonder how long (ever) it'll take for virtual desktop to be compatible with this. I guess it's possible they've built in some stuff to thwart its use.

I've got my cex "sell" in. As long as its now pre-order now, get it Nov, I'll bite and do without VR for a while.

Virtual desktop is already on the Quest, and you can sideload a version that allows wireless PC VR, if your PC and wireless connection is good enough.

I bought the 128gb Quest and with sideloading the space extra space has come in handy. The biggest issue with Quest storage is that until recently there were no cloud saves so uninstalling a game deleted your save games! Not all games support cloud saves yet, so having enough space so you don't have to uninstall games and lose the save files is nice to have. It's likely that all new games will support cloud saves though.
