Question about oil

I believe any oil is better than no oil.

If it was me I would have got a 1l container, topped it up and then booked in for a proper oil change.

Yeah. In some cars the light coming on does not mean it's low and to top it up....it means like....warning you will **** me up, stop.

And sometimes the light doesn't even come on.

I did a oil change once, undid the nut to drain the oil..... Half litre came out. I was like..... Wtf... Must be more, surly hahahaha. No light on dash. But when you turned the key the light worked

The oil warning light is an oil pressure switch in some cars, if it comes on you are risking engine damage as you say.
Never seen one illuminate in my life on any car I’ve ever owned.

In the manual it says in an emergency you can use up to 1l of any oil to top the car up between services. Any more than that and you need the PD specific 5-series oil.

Thats what I said  some top up in emergency is better than none.

But flush it through and get a full change.

Also enquire why a car is using more than 1 litre of oil between changes, seems high.

Seen an episode of the Car Wizard on YouTube.
He said he’s seen grown men fight over oil discussions.
I do what I thinks best, don’t always follow manufacturers instructions (if anything I change more frequently not less).
If my engine breaks as a result, I will blame myself.
(No problem yet, 39 vehicles and 32 years driving.)

Your last point of more than 1 car a year read out of context is quite funny :p Trust this man who hasn't made a car last a year!

I'd top up with what you have and then get it switched out at next service for the recommended stuff.

:D
Had my cars years in recent years.
It was the early days of chopping and changing.
I will see if I can come up with a list.
Only 1 ever left my stranded at the side of the road in all that time.

With cars containing the same engine as mine it means, "that knocking you started hearing 5 miles back, that's the bottom end."

theres some truth there, it’s utterly amazing it sounds like he worked where they tested stuff too but couldn’t absorb any of the information around.

we had a previously rambling about electric cars before aswell.

love it when people argue with Simon about Oil, it's as if he doesn't know about it, or develop oil for a living :D :p

Pretty much as I said rather than 'use an oil without a VW spec and it will be fine' as you stated

'A high majority of VW engines that experience mechanical issues or failures are due to prolonged use of lower to mid quality engine oils. Using the correct VW oil specification as outlined by VW for your engine type will offer the best possible engine protection, performance and longevity.'

A good example of using the wrong oil was the Ford Galaxy that had the the VAG PD diesel. A lot of these in later life had cam shaft damage as the Ford dealers put in the Ford oil which wasn't designed for PD engines.

Funny that ! But apparently oil doesn’t matter. :)
