Questions:

creating a business site would you:

1. use .com or .co.uk or it doesnt really matter?
2. dashes or without dashes? i.e. ilikethis.com or i-like-this.com (I personally think dashes differentiate the words so it is better?)

all one word, otherwise you sound crap when reading out the URL.

"i dash like dash this dash dot com"
"i like this dot com"

If you're a UK company, I'd go with a .co.uk, but if the .com is free, get that, but redirect to your .co.uk

1. Either. If it's possible I would register both .com and .co.uk.

2. Without dashes, because if you're saying the domain "namename dot com" sounds better than "name dash name dot com."

thanks but what if the name you want is taken.. and that name describes your business succintly, in that case would you consider a dash or choose a different name because there is a dash.

(as a side note, the name i want to register only has one dash)

Use a different name otherwise people will be going to the wrong website when looking for yours.

Amazon doesn't have anything to do with rainforests. And Google wasn't called search-engine.com

As above, take .com and .co.uk, if your just wanting one get the .com imo.
Preferably no dashes, but if you can only get a good name with dashes then its better than something terrible.

Dashes are awful in domain names, just don't.

Buy as many domains as you can afford to and use DNS forwarding. If you can get a unique name there's nothing to stop you using .co.uk, .com, .net etc going to the same site.
