Question re surgery

Hi

Not a medical thead, more a what happens next. Well been told i have gallstones, and lots of them. Im 26 around 6ft and 13 stone, so kinda odd but they run in the family.

Had the untrasounds, x rays and a endoscopy recently to find out what was wrong with me. Now i had a appointment yesterday with a consultant however it was like 2 mins and i feel i didnt have enought time to ask what was required. He just said i need surgery, filled out a form (stuck a sticker on with my name and wrote something across the form) and told me to hand it in to the front desk of that clinic.

Got to the desk and i was told to leave it on the table. I asked what do i do next and she suggested nothing. Okay i thought but as i was walking out i was thinking...how long do i wait, what is the procedure now. Kinda feel stupid for not asking him but he was running so late as he was stuck in surgery and overan by 1 and a half hours....we where all rushed through very quickly when he wa seeing patients.

Does anyone know what these forms do if someone has been in a similar situation, i want this gallbladder out now lol!
 
u prolly been booked for an "elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy" by the sounds of it
the paper you signed, that would be the consent form...
 
A letter will come in the post, likelyhood is you will need to attend for pre-op clinic where they will take bloods, swabs, blah blah. Then surgery sometime, depends one waiting times.

I would ring the consultant's secretary at the hospital if you have any questions. If you don't have her number then ring the hospital switchboard and ask them to put you through to him/her.

Call the consultants secretary, she should be able to answer any questions that you have. It's a fairly routine procedure. I waited about 3 months for surgery, during that time I was careful with my diet and had no further attacks (my first left me hospitalised for 4 days). I had a laparoscopic cholecystectomy, I was back at work 2 weeks to the day after my operation (though my job wasn't physical so I was able to go back quickly).

Oh and here just for you, my one and only self made gall stone....

My mom and grandmother are in another country under private medical and had the op in under 2 days after being told so kinda not the same (total time from pain to post op - 5 days).

It will most probably be in Telford or Shrewsbury hospital, so close to you :P.

Thanks for the pic, was told i have around 20-30 stones, cant wait for the op. Will almost certainly be going to private insurance after this. When you say 3 months was that in total or after you had everything done and then having to wait?
 
My aunt in-law is currently waiting for her operation date. 2 months and counting..

As mentioned you will probably get a letter for pre-op to take blood tests, weight etc
 
They did an ultrasound when I was admitted as an emergency. I was put on the waiting list straight away. I got a letter about 2 weeks before I was due to be operated on telling me my admission date. As I was young and otherwise fit and healthy my pre-op stuff was done the night before. So 3 months between initial diagnosis and operation.

I've had two operations for different things, one open and one laparoscopic. Other than my initial consultation I didn't see the consultant again until the day before surgery and I've never been to a pre-op clinic either.

EDIT: Wait times etc. it will vary depending on your location. I can't say for England if they have any RTT(referral to treatment) targets, certainly for Scotland it's 18 weeks (though many operations are carried out much more quickly).

You should receive a letter soon giving you time & date for the op. It will also contain a time & date for a pre-op. A nurse will talk to you about everything to do with the op at the latter appointment, take your vitals and answer any question you have.

All the above is assuming your hospital or primary care trust is a decent one.
 
lol, so i can count it OUT being done this year! Been stuggling with this since June so fed up now not eating anything slighly tasty or enjoying my drink :D

I wish they would give you more info. During all the procedures etc etc it was the waiting to hear from them that really got to me.
 
What happens next is you realise the **** state of our NHS system and get yourself a BUPA card and have it done privately!

Not completely though. I've had to deal with the NHS for years for IBD, and whilst there are small things that could be improved, I'm glad for the overall service they provide.

When they decided I needed surgery, it's always been done within the month. I left hospital last Tuesday post op and they didn't leave me notes, instructions, or a sick note, however they have agreed to see me today (I called them Friday morning) to talk through things.


Besides, when it's too late, you can't go private as they won't cover pre-existing conditions.
 
That's quick lol, I was left with a broken arm for over a year and then was on the surgery waiting list for about 3 months.
Doubt I could have gone BUPA for the surgery considering it was already broken, would have cost a fortune?
