Question to those who use a monitor as a display.

Of course you can, depending on the Console..

I use a 360 connected to a monitor, and use the optical connector to output to a small 5.1 surround amp/system that I also use for my PC... If not, I'd use the red/white phono's and an appropriate lead (from any decent hifi place) to connect to my normal PC Speakers..

Tell us what console you have, and how you are connecting to the monitor, plus what input type your PC speakers are, and I'm sure we can advise futher..

It depends what setupp you have.

I have an old XBox 360 without HDMI. I conecct it to my monitor via component or VGA and plug the phono (red+white) connectors into the back of my Hifi.

Tell us what hardware you have.

It's a PS3. Connected to the monitor with HDMI (FYI I haven't bought the ps3 yet as I want to get this sorted first). Pc is connected via dvi.

Speakers are creative 5.1's. They all plug into a sub, which in turn plugs into the soundcard via 3 wires.

i feel your pain buddy. Im not going to explain how because i cant be bothered, but i have a highly complicated connection of audio wires somehow connecting my xbox and pc to my speakers. Just use 3.5mm to phono (red and white) and likewise until it all fits together.

Should be an optical out on the back of the PS3.check you have one on the back of your 5.1 system and if so buy an optical cable.

Because you have 5.1 phono wont be upto the job. needs optical or coax afaik. dont think PS3 does the latter.

hmmm, if it is 5.1 there should be one somewhere, that is the problem with these stupid "PC soundsystems", much better with a propper amp and speakers.

But I suspect there may be one on the back of the PC in the soundcard as it sounds like it is soem kind of all in one job.

Another way would be to connect HDMI to TV and then use the optical out from the TV (monitor), but this is no good in your case as you have the output on the PS3 anyway.

The soundcard does have one, so is it possible to connect to that and get sound? and to the above comment. Yes it has speakers, but I have a brilliant 5.1 system versus puny pc speakers.

Another option that may be easier, i have some expensive sony headphones (nice) How could I get sound out of them?

My official Xbox 360 VGA lead came with all the connections. Vga cable into monitor, red and white phono leads into supplied adaptor, adaptor into line in on my X-Fi card. Easy.

can't you connect the red/white to 3.5 jack connector (comes with the 360) to the cables coming from the 360 and then use a female 3.5 to female 3.5 converter?

Yes, if your sound card has one then that will be it, but make sure it is optical in and not out!

headphones and stereo devices are easy, just plug the HDMI into the monitor and your headphones into the monitor if you have one would be the best solution so you can choose which you use without swapping cables.

Or like any stereo setup you just connect the red/white cables to a 3.5mm headphone adapter or cable (available all over the place for pennys) and plug the headphoens into it.

I run my PS3 through a dell lcd moniotor and have speaker connected to the audio output. Works fine but its annoying when I'm watching a movie on bed and can't change the volume remotely. Its a massive flaw with the official remote that it doesn't have a volume button, I mean surely they could program it just to change the master volume on the console itself? Would be helpful!

I have my PS3 hooked upto my 24" Benq monitor via hdmi, and audio uses optical connection to logitech z5500 speakers. PC hooks up via dvi and coax audio connector.

Well I'am gonna just go ahead and buy the ps3. I'am gonna get the shop to chuck in a hdmi and optical cable. Then I'am just gonna have to see what I can come up with.

I'll probable post again here if I come into any probs.

well speakers would obviously be better. As I could just plug headphones into them when needed. But sound of some sort would do.

Going to do this method http://www.overclock.net/playstation/191028-how-play-your-ps3-through-your.html

But instead of all those cables getting a compact adapter

And a coupler.

So basically the component (just the audio ones) connect to the adaptor, which connects to the couple, which connects to the speaker cable. Hopefully giving me 2.1 sound.

Think this will work?
