Is this the right forum for this question?

Anyway getting my PS3 this week so i've got 2 simple questions on this subject.

Is 100gb HDD going to be OK as an upgrade? I mean what do I actually need the space for?

Does it have to be a 5400 drive or can I put a 7200 drive in?

Ta

There isn't much point in upgrading the HDD if you don't know what to use it for or have intentions of using 100Gb. 40Gb should be enough for anyone, the upgrade imo is only necessary for Linux or downloading every demo of PSN.

You need to use a laptop hard drive or 2.5" one.

i have 22 demos, 16 full games, 3 playstation eye titles and 3 ps1 games from the psn, plus install data from gt5p and ninja gaiden.

ive used 62gb.

It was a figure of speech really. But not many people im sure will have 22 demos or 16 full games. 40Gb is more than enough imo for the average user. By all means upgrade the hard drive, but if your asking what the extra space is for, then i personally dont think you'll need bigger :)

dont be too suprised, demos are free and the games are cheap. dont forget, i have no music or videos either, which most other people will want to do:)

Well the point being - I wanted to get a feeling for what people use theirs for first but if James.Miller can put that much on it and only use 62GB then I think i'll just leave it for now and see how I go.

I don't think I'll be putting music on it, but movies and/or demo's is a possibility. What I was wondering though is whether I can file share and stream movies from my PC through the PS3?

Isn't it a bit mad to open up the PS3 before your warranty expires?

Nah as it doesnt involve opening up the ps3 at all, just removing a cover and sliding the old one out, also it states in the manual that it doesnt void the warranty.

Well i have a 160GB drive in mine (details in the PS3 faq sticky), and when play TV is released i will up grade to a 250GB at least. You can never have enough storage space lol.
You can stream content from your PC, so you dont need put vids/photos/music on the PS3 HDD but i prefer to as if i go round my friends with it we can have the media available all the time.

if you're going to get Play TV or use it as your primary storage for music then upgrade it, otherwise don't bother.

That being said, I'm likely to get Play TV and I'm still not likely to upgrade it as I'll just copy recorded TV over to my NAS as it fills up.

Cool, this has been a useful thread. If I can stream everything from the PC then that's one reason to wait. Also if I can fully backup all game saves before replacing the hard drive then again another reason to wait. I'm not sold on the PlayTV thing yet either. So the sensible thing to do is just see how I go, if I need to upgrade in the future then I will do, if I don't, then I won't :)

I was going to just leave it due to streaming everything from my mac, but with games such as everybody's golf taking up just shy of 5 gig to install, i think my 40 might not last all that long...

I have a 120 from my macbook waiting in the ranks for if the need arrises (upgrading the macbook to 250), but i dont really wanna have to do it...
