Questions to ask applicants during interviews...ideas?

You're in London right?

A good one I like is, give me a rough estimate of how many tubes are running on the underground just now?

its not about the numbers themselves, its wether they actually give working it out a good go.

i.e they may say 'take 20 lines, 30 stations per line, 1 tube in each at every other station...

etc etc

a lot of people can't even give that a go, surprisingly

Any interviewer who comes out with crap like that is trying to show how clever they are and good at interviewing, while in reality clearly demonstrating the obvious. If I was asked such nonsense I would get up and walk out of the room, my time is too valuable to waste on such rubbish.

I go through the applicant's cv asking them to explain how they did the things they claimed to have achieved. Use lots of open questions.

Tubes don't run, they are just tunnels, what a silly question, are you referring to tube trains?

That would be my answer :D

Sometimes the questions are meant to give the interviewer an insight into your thought processes so they will ask a question that may have multiple plausible answers just to see how you approach it. That or they might just be messing with you, that's also possible.

The question wasn't abstract, but just one that few people could answer well: "tell us about a time your integrated a unique idea into business so as to change management procedure and increase profitability".

I just sat quiet for a few seconds, politely laughed and said "pass" with a smirk, which thankfully caused the interviewers to laugh as well. It was like someone from HR just googled a list of the most ball-aching questions of all time and decided to put them in there :p

Wow, some really weird suggestions in here...

The problem is that there isn't a one-size-fits-all approach to interviewing. Some roles will warrant a highly technical interview, with little or no focus on personality, motivation, career aspiration, etc. Other times, you'll be recruiting for a member of a small team working in close proximity with a number of other people, and personality or "fit" will be a much more important factor. Interview questions will likely be different if you're recruiting a young person mostly on education and attitude for a junior role, vs an older or more experienced candidate for a more senior position.

And there's still never a right time to ask how you'd work out the number of spiders in Brazil, or other irrelevant "problem solving" nonsense.

SideWinder - ask about experience, ask about their understanding of and approach to the role. Make sure that you're asking questions the answers to which will help you make a decision. If you don't need to know about the candidate's hobbies, or their life aspirations... don't ask.

You can't do that lol. What if you are from outside of London and applying for a job in London, that kind of information is pointless.

If I got asked that in an interview I would most likely ask how is that relavant to the job I'm applying for (unless you are applying for a job within the underground... lol). As an interviewer how would you answer that ?

Ask if they agree that "When the seagulls follow the trawler, it is because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea"

Posted this in TIAM a few days ago. Ask them what their favourite pokemon is and if they say any pokemon from anything other than the 1st generation then just ask them to leave.

If I said to you: My my my my, music hits me, so hard, makes me say "Oh my lord" what would you say in response?

Bonus points for delivering your response in the intended style, job is yours if you've got the trousers.
