oh for god sake fox seriously get of your high horse "I put peoples life at risk" I have blocked people once or twice very briefly

Really?

I get annoyed when people do this and do my best to block them out,

Nice backpeddling now you can see what you do isn't sensible ;)

if you think everyone should honestly drive right up to the point where the lane closes before even thinking about merging theres something wrong with you,

Highway Code said:
You should follow the signs and road markings and get into the lane as directed

Merging in turn is recommended

its got nothing to do with backpeddling its got more to do with the fact that I have been out with friends and had a few drinks and then to act "cool" I typed some stuff on an internet forum, I have never blocked anyone out to the point where it has been dangerous, regardless of what you think I will know what I think is right and thats gradual merging in turn, so shall we just leave it at that because I cant see this going anywhere ?

How can you gradually merge in turn, its not merging in turn then is it? It needs to be oderly and uniform - one car from each lane in turn. The only practical way to do this is at the obstruction otherwise it's too disjointed and thus not merge in turn

0 I think is right and thats gradual merging in turn,0

It might be what you think, doesn't make it right and causes o many pointless traffic jams that I get ***** of with For the love of all think about junctions behind you and yes this happens very very often.
If everyone get's into one lane, 600 yards short of the merger sign (assuming dual carriageway). That que is now 1200 yards long, rather than 600 yards if they used both lanes. So you block up every junction for 1200 yards behind the merge in turn sign. So people wanting to go in another direction and that junction are now screwed and have to wait, as so many people do not know the highway ode and do not think of others.

The thread wasn't even intended to be about merging or obstructions?

This is OcUK...nothing goes to plan. :D

In answer to your question, it depends. If I'm in the slower lane I stay there, if I'm in the faster one I'll merge later on, nearer the merging point.

In the case of your OP example I'd be in the left lane as soon as I could get into it (if I wasn't already in it) when I realise I'm in the wrong lane. :)

You were talking about when a lane ends? Surely a lane ending is an obstruction and requires.. merging?

2 lanes, left goes into a tunnel and right goes on a bridge, neither has an obstruction or obstacle. :)

And neither ends, either. He mentioned lanes ending in his OP hence peoples natural assumption.

If you are talking about queueing to leave a Motorway and there is only one lane off it then obviously you sit in that lane and wait - to do anything else is dangerous.

Which is basically what the OP was saying, just not worded the best as far as I can see.

By ending I think he means changing course rather than actually stopping being used. :)

Making less than efficient use of the available road by not merging in turn is just dumb.

Fox is 100% right on this subject, however, people who use an empty lane to queue jump a different direction at a Y should be shot at dawn, after their testicles (female genitalia if appropriate) are removed with a rusty blade.

Those people are the scum of the earth.

I just skimmed through 3/4 of the thread, however...

The main reason for tailbacks are the idiots who don't leave any space in front of their vehicle for other cars to pull in.

Perfect example of this, I was on the motorway about a week back, approaching roadworks meaning lanes 2 and 3 have to merge into lane 1 further up the road. As the traffic starts to slow I leave quite a large gap in front of me, but still maintaining the speed to keep up with the vehicle ahead.

A few people slip into the gap, flashing their hazards as a sign of appreciation, all the while Mrs Numpty in her Zafira is sat up my arse. About a mile up the road, this **** overtakes me in the narrowing lane 2, only to find herself stuck in front of me.

Such a shame I was coming off at the next junction. She got a nice blast on the airhorn followed by a tight fisted wave out of the window as I pulled onto the sliproad.

Hes talking about the arse bandits that when on say a dual carriageway and there is a lane end sign in say 600 yards and everyone else is getting into the lane they are meant to and these people just carry on going in the empty lane right up until it closes then push in! royally narks me off!

thats what your supposed to do. merge inturn in 600 yards.

if they wanted to close that lane there, they would close it there, not in 600 yards time.....

thank god you wrote that I was about to drive to your house and pluck you nasal hairs out with a curling tong

agree with everything fox has said with merge-in lanes and this more important comment regarding motorway exits

woe betide anyone who indicates in at the last minute at a motorway exit when I'm around, especially if they have a taxi badge in the back window, nothing brightens my day more than seeing people try this, fail and have to drive off to the next junction, I find sitting on my horn for the entire duration of their maneuver to work quite well, oddly people always seem amazed to see a tuned beetle driver get so animated
