Forgive my relative ignorance on this topic its been a looooooooong time since I was a regular CS player - marriage and children putting an end to that particular sport :)

However a few lads in the office thought we'd have a blast and relive our youth a little. The question is can you legally download CS 1.6 for free and play on an internal LAN or do we have have to pay a few quid and go through Steam??? I was under the impression it could be done for free these days.

Cheers

Egon

Yeah I found that, but assumed I still needed Steam (and therefore needed to purchase) to play.

I'll DL and give it a try anyway.

Not sure about the download already given - I'd assume it is just Steam+CS files.

To play CS1.6 you need Steam (free), you then need to create an account (free), and you also need a valid CD key that allows you to play CS1.6 (not free)

So yeah you need to pay a bit of cash if you want to play CS1.6.

There used to be many different games which the CD keys gave you access to CS1.6. I think my HL:Generations cd key did, then the HL:Blue Shift cd keys did too.

I think the best option now is to either buy it over Steam ($9.99) using a CC, or to look for Counter Strike:Anthology (but NOT 'HalfLife:Anthology') in a high street retailer, should be about £5-10 these days.

Also, each player will need their own cd key - steam prevents a cd key from being registered with more than one account. It also prevents more than one person using any account online at the same time.

Hope that helps.

Yep, I can confirm it is indeed CS+Steam that the link points to.

It certainly looks like the only option is DL steam, install, then pay a few quid for a key, its certainly the quickest and easiest option anyway.

you may aswell get counter strike source if your going to pay though....looks much nicer and had some physics in it too.....pretty much the same game just updated

Nah it isn't. Completely different.

Btw you can pick up condition zero and it comes with 1.6 free. Although if you can find CS anthology may as well get that instead.

You can download the old CS with Bots from a german site somewhere, can't remember which one though.

ooh thread resurrection... well we binned the counterstrike idea as I was the only one with a key and the others were too skin tight to buy one !!

Anyway we decided to play Delta Force 2 instead since between us we had enough discs, i'd never played before and its no CS but it was still plenty of fun even more so with some custom maps and the fact that we all work in the same office :)
