Going to buy one in a mo but to save me another trip can somebody tell what ingredients I will need to buy to bake a bog standard loaf from the recipe in the manual ?

All you need is strong flour. water and yeast to bake a basic loaf. The best thing to do is buy the breadmaker first, look at the recipe leaflet in the box and then get what you need for the loaf that you want. The other thing you can do if this is not possible and you can't get the breadmaker first, is to go along to your local flour stockist and have a look at the flours. All of the strong flours have recipes on the side, so you can take it from there. It is not necessary to buy special flour for breadmakers.

Wessex Mill make a fantastic range of flours with all different seeds and grains in , so they are worth finding - mostly in bakers and delis.

Other good makes are Glebe Farm and Dove's.

Waitrose have a really good strong Canadian white flour that is good to add to most recipes. :D

Have fun. :D:D

ok, ta :)

is there a difference between strong bread flour and strong flour?

Yes, strong flour has more gluten in it, you won't make a good loaf from normal flour.

Also, ignore what the manual says about putting powdered milk in the mixture, it didn't work for me and made the bread go all manky.
I use 400g strong flour, 300g water, 1 sachet of instant yeast, 1tsp salt and 30g olive oil when I do a loaf and it always turns out good.

EDIT. misread what you put about the flours, for the ones you mentioned there probably isn't a difference, just different terms from different companies.

panasonic ciabatta loaf is
1tsp dried yeast
500g strong white flour
1tsp salt
1tsp sugar
3tblsp olive oil and 350ml of water

its a tad sad that I know that without checking the cookbook.

thanks all :)

got it and bought a variety of flours & yeast to use

going to set it tonight so I have some nice bread for breakfast :D

I got one a couple of months ago too - not had one bad loaf out of it yet. The fruit loaf is lovely and the smell while it is cooking mmmmmmmmmmmmm

Enjoy

There's nothing like waking up to the smell of cheese & onion bread cooking in the morning. It smells so delicious!

If you fee like cheating, you can buy packets of bread mixture from Tesco - can't remember the make, buy the cheese & onion is lovely and costs about 50p. It makes two small loaves too.

right, just took out the first loaf and it smells amazing :)

The kneading attachment is stuck in the loaf though although I can't see anyway this can be avoided unless I've done something wrong

Thats strange. My attachment usually stays in the pan and I have trouble getting it out to wash it, it has never come out and stayed in the loaf. Oh well, happy hunting!!! Glad your first loaf was a success

Yeah my parent's one did that, just used some needle nose pliers to get it out.

I find if you stop washing the bread tin each time the attachment becomes less likely to detach and end up in your loaf. Just dig it out with your fingers, it will be in the middle at the bottom above.

Sometimes it does get stuck, theres nothing wrong with it.

If you take the bread out quickly then it comes out easily. If you leave it in there then it gets stuck.

I've got the SD-255 model. Its a lovely machine tbh.

Do you want to reccomend any other recipies, I always just have the standard one. I can't seem to tell the difference between them tbh

The recipe was ok, the bread was maybe just a bit too dense and doughy for my likeing

Got it making some sandwich bread atm that should be lighter.

I wouldn't mind some other recipes other than the book has or any specific brands of ingredients that work well

I may use bottled water too and see if it improves the taste a little

The ciabtta loaf is lighter, try that.
Sun dried tomato and basil bread is nice (with cheese on top). I sometimes substitute tomato puree for some of the water which gives the bread a nicer flavour.

Tried some different yeast today and the bread was excellent

very light, fluffy and tasted great

the loaf was so much better than supermarket bread
