Quick Kitten question!

Reserved a 9 week old kitten to collect on friday! We brought most of the bits over the last month or so and have just been waiting for a kitten to pop up near us and now one has!

So i was just wondering when do i need to book it in for the vet for initial vaccinations? I understand these need to be had around 9weeks which is his current age now. I dont think it would be fair to take him straight away on saturday, would have thought i should let him settle a bit first and maybe book him in early next week? Or would that be too late?

This is the only thing im a bit unclear on, other than that we cant wait! Been looking into it for months so hopefully are prepared :)

Both kittens I had I waited till they were about 10 weeks and took them to the vet and let them do what they needed.
 
If you aren't letting the cat outside or mixing it with outdoor cats getting it's jags a week later is a non issue.

Speak to your vet and see what they recommend. Letting him settle in for a few days should be plenty.

One note, make sure he's settled enough so you know what his normal behaviour is. Our cat had a reaction to his first jabs, and we spotted it as he was acting out if sorts.

the sooner after 9 weeks the better, while its true contact with other cats is the main risk contaminants etc can be brought in from outside, (while the risk is low) and the purpose of the first visit is also to get the kitten checked over to ensure its healthy etc.

They will also generally worm and flea them which is pretty important because either can kill a poor kitty if it gets too bad! let it get settled in for a week by all means but don't leave it too long :)

Thanks for the advice, what i will do is maybe give them a ring in the week and book it for next week on friday or earlier giving him time to get used to us and for us to get used to him! We will probably be letting him out but not just yet

dont wanna let him out for 6 months really, needs the two sets of vaccines in the first couple months and then castration and micro chip anywhere between 4-6 months, let him out too early and he may run away or worse.

Indeed this suits us well anyway. We are on a new build area and they are just finishing up around here for a few months so wouldnt want him out there while building is going on

Any other advice for the first few days / weeks will be appreciated, think we know what to do! But any more insight is welcome!

Just make sure you confine him to one room to begin with, bathroom/kitchen etc. somewhere preferably with wipe clean floors, have the litter tray and food and water in there (not too close together) as well as plenty of toys.

Leave the carrier you brought him home in with a blanket in there as well he will probably feel safe in there!

Let him out more and more over the next few weeks but shut him in there overnight or when you are at work for the first few weeks just to stop him getting himself into any mischief as cats are great at doing this. aside from that take lots of pictures, kittens grow so fast !

Also make sure you spend lots of time playing, and bonding with him, pick him up and give him cuddles, (not too hard!) he will probably wriggle and squirm but getting regular gentle contact is important to build a bond up and getting him used to you guys. Playing is especially important, kittens have so much energy!
and enjoy your new kitty!

One other thing I found useful, is taking my first kitten out in the car in his carrier a few times when he was very young, it gets them used to the sounds and feeling of the car and makes trips to the vets as an adult MUCH easier trust me, cats can get aggressive and very loud if they dont like car journeys.

all great tips thank you, will let her read this post too :) both trying to get as clued up as possible but its a learning process! we have had family cats our whole lives but not one togeather :)

No problem, my brother recently got a new kitten as well, they are a lot of fun but utterly mental ! :D
