Apologies if this is a slightly silly question but I am purchasing a second harddrive for my rig, 500gb is getting filled up fast and I want a second to store data on.

When I first built this rig my knowledge of pc's was sub-par so I made a few unknowing decisions on parts, one being this HDD.

It's very good but only has 16mb cache, yet the new one I am buying has 64mb.

My OS, all programs and everything are on the 16mb cache disc and I imagine having them all on the other will improve performance dramatically.

Would just writing every single file on my current hdd to the second suffice? OS not included in that write, meaning all program files and such. Obviously I can write any randomly stored data with no issues, but would writing program files interfere with their ability to work?

Sorry for the long wided post, thank you in advance for any and all replies.

Regards,
Paul Smith.

The amount of cache has very little effect on performance. 16MB is enough. It's a numbers game for the marketing men.

If you want to clone the existing drive to the new unit then you'll need a special utility such as Acronis True Image or Ghost. If you copy the files across then Windows won't boot.

That's interesting to hear, it's good to know there is a way of putting it all onto the new HDD.

I might just keep using this HDD and the new one for storage if the performance effect is as little as you say, I take it these programs are all purchase only use?

thanks for the help, I'll look into them!
