I have a D2X PCI-E sound card, which has short PCI-E connecctor at bottom of card.....can I fit this connector to a PCI-E 16x (or 8x) connection on motherboard which is a lot longer??? I usually just put GPU's into the 16x slots on the mobo

Cheers

But it may reduce the PCI-E bandwidth to the other PCI-E slot(s) if that's something which may affect your setup.

So dropping a slot from 16X to say 8X depending on the board, thats if the OP is using a graphics card at all in the top slot? as he says he usually drops a graphics card in there, sounds like he isn't? I thought that dropping from 16X to 8X brings minimal difference.

If the motherboard the OP has is a 16X and then 4X it remains at that no matter what?

:) is that right?

As far as it goes that's right but it depends on the OP's particular motherboard and what other cards they have plugged into it.

16x 8x board, Giga Z68-DS3P

I installed a GTx 580, it has a single PCI-E slot just below the top 16x PCIe, then below that another 8x PCIe slot (for Xfire, SLI). If I install the 580 in the top 16x slot, i have to install a PCIe audio card in the 1x slot immediatley below it. If i do this then audio card is pretty much touching the 580. Now that would be OK....but it probably hindering air supply into the 580 as its pretty much covering the fans on it. So I wanted to install audio card further down in the 8x PCIe slot. But I guess thats going to drop performance of my GPU and make 8x instead of 16x.
Any ideas?

There is one 1xPCIe slot above the GPU, but as ive just installed a Corsair H80...i cant get the audio card in there :(

I guess it will probably just have to go right next to the 580...unless anyone has any beter ideas.

Cheers

Which motherboard?

I can see the GA-Z68P-DS3 which operates at x16/x4 so would be fine with the setup you propose.

The graphics card in the slot operating at x16 and the sound card in the slot operating at x4.

its the UD3P...8xSLI, Xfire
I have giged the H80 round now so I can get the D2x into the top single pcie slot...so all is well now
