Quick question about bank transfers and being scammed!

No it won't

From personal experience. This did happen to me. And it was the worst experiences of my life financially.
The bank implicated me in the fraud and I had to prove I WASN'T involved.
It was ok in the end. But wow the stress and potential damage was incredible

Even a bank transfer is something I'm wary of now.

Evening all

I'm selling an item and the potential buyer will only use bank transfer, I prefer PayPal gift. It's a few hundred pound so concerned about being scammed.

If they transfer the money to my bank, can they then say or do something to get their money back, after I've sent them the item?

Cheers!

You're bothered about being scammed, yet use PPG...

Are PayPal gift payments protected?

What does PayPal say? A PayPal spokesperson said: "PayPal Buyer Protection does not cover money transfers between friends or family. If someone selling you goods or a service asks you to send a friends and family payment, you should refuse.

I am really surprised it is allowed in the MM.

I've sold lots on FB Marketplace/Gumtree and the buyer has paid via bank transfer. If the buyer's name matches the account name the transfer came from, then all's fine. Plus it's bank transfer. I've also sold items on marketplace via post, they BT first then I post. Obviously a level of trust is involved here but nobody has received dog poop in their letterbox yet :p

It is highly unlikely someone will be using a compromised bank account in 2022. The level of MFA and checks is too heavy to simply not notice your account has been compromised in the first place and have it locked down - Most of the time this happens automatically anyway.

I'm not, given you need a certain number of posts to get access and that there's the Trust feature, the chances of being ripped off by someone is slim, yeah you tend to get less money than you would on Facebook Marketplace, or eBay but you don't get the messers you do on other platforms so getting paid less is worth it to many..

Usually if someone on FB marketplace or gumtree says they want it posting, it's a scam. Even if you think it's not, you're better off waiting for a local buyer.

I'm fine with BT on collection, the buyer will do the transfer in front of me on their phone and money is instantly sent.

You'll know it's a scam pretty quickly if you have a half decent conversation with the buyer first. Just people observation really. The scammers will 100% of the time always open up a chat with something along the lines of "this is for my son who is away, I want to post to him" yada yada. They also aren't native English so they spell poorly.

My favourite is this:

Buyer: Is this still available.
Me: Yes.
Buyer: What's the lowest you will go?
Me: It's priced really well, but I can drop it by £30.
Buyer: OK I will take it at full price with shipping cost.
Me: *block*

Yes in person is OK. The fraud case I had was entirely online

I had this yesterday, but it was a UPS driver would come and collect it and bring me an envelope with cash in it..

I must be naive but I don't understand, if they want the goods first then the answers no, I've sold stuff on gumtree but the bloke wanted to check it first so drove up from Devon. Paid cash, I chucked in something for free as he seemed an alright bloke.

I meant using PP gift which offers no protection, a couple of forums I used to use did not allow this method of payment because of this reason.

For sites like Gumtree and Facebook Market I only ever sell locally, only ever take cash on delivery and always meet in a public place away from my house. And even then you still get the odd chancer that tries to pay with fake notes or has the cash in an envelope and then tries to pull a switcheroo.

Yes, but as I said, the chances of being ripped off by someone here is lower than, say gumtree of FB Marketplace because you have to be active in the community to get access to the marketplace here, so using a method of payment that offers no protection isn't as much of an issue..

your never ever ever buy or sell anything with paypal gift

if one of you is to tight to pay the fees you deserve everything that can go wrong absolutly no way to resolve a dispute

you have no legal rights at all hence the title "GIFT"

I will always pay the fees even on something I buy for £10

i will add I have bought and sold 1000's of items on forums and ebay and its had my back when I needed it

Well I live and learn with regards to pp gift. I'll bear that in mind.

That said, I've sold, easily several thousands of pounds worth of whatever over the years using ppg and have never, ever, ever been scammed. Perhaps I've just been lucky.

This one time I accept bt, I was scammed, or at least they attempted to scam me.

Also, I know and appreciate that PayPal Buyer Protection does not cover money transfers between friends or family. But I was the seller, which is why I've been using it in the past.

Fraudulent bank transfer is not easy as it requires an illegally funded account which you typically won't find for small transactions i.e. a few hundred quid it tends be in the thousands or tens of thousands its rarely worth it otherwise. If you want funding that can't be reversed other than cash it would be Western Union money transfer. You'll pay a handling fee though.

Have you had this happen to you? What did you do? The cheek!
