Quick question about bank transfers and being scammed!

I must be naive but I don't understand, if they want the goods first then the answers no, I've sold stuff on gumtree but the bloke wanted to check it first so drove up from Devon. Paid cash, I chucked in something for free as he seemed an alright bloke.

Funny how i was 100% right this stunk of a scam and no you will hopefully understand why i was asking the OP for more details while also highlighting BT isnt unscammable

You were only 'right' because BT was the focus. The scam that was attempted was irrespective of BT. It could have been literally any payment provider.

You a politician?

Fraudulent bank transfer is not easy as it requires an illegally funded account which you typically won't find for small transactions i.e. a few hundred quid it tends be in the thousands or tens of thousands its rarely worth it otherwise. If you want funding that can't be reversed other than cash it would be Western Union money transfer. You'll pay a handling fee though.

I think when it happened to me it was a hacked account. No idea how it happened. But I believe the persons name on the account wasn't the person I was talking to

I can't be sure. But I think that's what it was.

I was highlighting BT isnt infallible and i was asking the OP for more infor eg what he was selling and what platform it was sold on as the "BT scams" are more common on certain platforms and therefore would scream scam... which it inevitably was

The fact it was BT was irrelevant though. It was a fake email saying money had arrived.

For sites like Gumtree and Facebook Market I only ever sell locally, only ever take cash on delivery and always meet in a public place away from my house. And even then you still get the odd chancer that tries to pay with fake notes or has the cash in an envelope and then tries to pull a switcheroo.

I thought I might have fell victim to this. I sold a TV stand, was only £30. A Jewish bloke had turned up with his wife and 2 young lads (probably 10-12) in a big people carrier. I helped him load the TV stand in the car and he then whips out a £50 note and says do I have any change. I knew I had a £20 note indoors, and it was only as I had walked round the back of my house into the kitchen that it hit me it could have been a fake note and he's done a runner with the stand . But no he was there waiting.

You didn't really get scammed in terms of them using a Dodgey bank accounts you literally received an email from a Gmail account saying the funds had been sent send me the stuff.

What bank sends an email? You just get the funds transferred :p

Take the payment via bt, and then once its received, only then check the name of the account it came from, and then ask for proof that person is the named one.

If they can't prove, then it's a scam.

If they can with some sort of Id/bill then you should be ok
