Quick Question - Installing CPU

General silly question here, but I am trying to install my 2500K I5 into an Asrock Z368 Extreme4 Gen3 Mobo.

Now I have followed the instructions, taken the socket protector out, inserted the CPU etc, I then close the load plate, and try to push the leaver down, but it seems very stiff, makes a scraping noise and is marking the CPU where it makes contact.

Is this normal, do I just need to force it, or is there something I am doing wrong? I don't just want to push it down and end up crushing the CPU.

Thanks,

I have watched that, it makes it look much easier than I am finding it, I am a weakling but the arm on the plate wobbles as I press down on it, and requires a great amount of force.

Also as I said it makes a grinding noise.... But unless I can close it I can't continue... But as it is making 2 small marks on either side of the CPU I am worried I am going to destroy it...

Upload some photos? It's normal for the lever to feel firm to push, but marks on the CPU? Doesn't sound right to me!

Please don't take any offence, but do you definitely have it in the right way round? :p

CPU should just drop in place with no effort or force needed. If sits flat then its in. Place the retention brackets down and push lever down. It does need some force and is stiff but if the CPU is inserted correctly it shouldn't be a problem.

Off-topic, but your Gaming Blog link is dead in your signature!

Ok, I think I was just being a wuss, I gave it a little more force and although it made the weird scraping noise, it is held firmly in place now.... It did make 2 small marks one either side of the CPU (On the metal bit) but I am going to hope that is normal.

I am prety sure tha CPU is in correctly as it fits the grooves, though I must admit I was thrown when the pins were on the motherboard and not the CPU... It is far to long since I have built a system!

It actualy took me less time to install the H60 cooler than it did to push the CPU arm down... Oops!

Thanks guys,

When I pushed down I thought it felt like it was needing a little too much force too so I let the arm go and there was 2 little marks on the CPU (I have the same CPU and same mobo) but when I manned up and pushed the retainer arm thing down all is good, I think its because the square bit that holds the chip in pace goes down flat before it moves horizontally a little. Nothing to worry about.

The levers will always be 'slightly' stiff but modern CPUs pretty much only fit in one way due to the indentations on the CPU itself...I will be very surprised if you got it wrong.

I always worry when installing a intel cpu. I feel as if i am going to break it.

Yeah, I have always been AMD myself!

But good news, the PC turned on right away, and then loaded my old windows install from my just dead PC.... Which is bad in that it has no idea what is going on, but good that I can now spend the evening backing up my data ready to install Windows 7 :)

Should be fun!
