Quick Question - Oil temps

I AM INTERESTED IN ROUGHLY HOW LONG THE OIL TAKES TO WARM UP.

We've answered that.
15mins is fine, it take's my Mustang about that long in the morning to college on a 1.2m journey.

If you want to get exact, list your car and we can start talking technicals and optimum operating perameters, but I'd have to get back to you on friday ;)

You were interested in how long it took without doing damage.

Quite clearly a very different thing. Telling you in which circumstance you will not do damage satisfies your query.

-OIL GRADE

A pretty damn good start that's for sure considering...you know.....that's going to be one of the biggest defining factors.

You do realise grading exists for the purposes of oil use - how long it takes to get to temperature with variables such as the likely ambient temperature.

It does make you wonder why more manufacturers don't do more to protect engines when they're cold! A rev limiter at 3.5k until the oil gets up to x pressure(a fairly accurate way of telling when it's warmed up when twinned with experience)/temp or something!

oooook. Can someone tell me why this has become a bitching session?

My car can take anything up to 20min to get up to temperature fully. If I am on a motorway or dual carriage way pretty much straight away, then this is when it takes it's longest due to having an oil cooler which opens its thermostat at 72degC.
Normal city driving though, 15min, or there abouts.

A situation where power beyond the limit is needed or you like...crash/die would be undesirable. :p

How many cars need replacement engines because of a lack of mechanical sympathy? I would happily bet a large percentage of drivers do no untoward damage by not following a warm up procedure before going about their normal daily routine in the car.

Because they would like you to buy a new one in 10 years at the most would be my guess?

Thanks, so i should be ok to let loose after about 15 minutes.

Because Gaygle decided to stipulate "doing damage" and apparently wants no advice/info on it.

"LOL ALL YEW NEED 2 KNOW IS DNT REDLINE IT!!" - Thanks, i think i read that in Fisher Price's "My First Car".

DNWEUFNEUJ BUT HOW LONG DOES IT TAAAAAAAAKEEEEEEEEEE?!?!?!?

Ahh, so you did see it. Excellent. The bold/italic/capital letters thing wasn't actually my idea - my friend who teaches special needs kids recommended it.

Your Fisher Price "My first car" would have covered all of your queries in this thread so I guess you lacked the attention span to finish it.

I guess next you will want to know how long it takes to warm up the tyres so you do not fall off the side of the road and how long to let the alternator charge the battery before turning the lights on as to not kill it.

You are the one who was questioning about doing damage, expect informed responses on that subject. Rather than give cocky replies about how said information is supposedly useless/not relevant you might be better looking at what you actually asked.

Hey, you can't take my "Fisher Price" quip and try to use it against me. -10 Internet Cool Points.

Anyway, no, i stopped reading at "only put air into the tyres".

Na, i've already argued with a div on another forum about that. He said as long as i wasn't drifting i would be fine, but i he couldn't understand that i was just interested. He didn't even understand after i used the bold/italic/capitals combo - so at least you've got that going for you!

Right, it took a while, but i eventually got my answer. It seems it takes around 15-20 mins for the oil to warm up to operating temperature. But don't worry, i didn't totally disregard everything you've said in this thread - i'll be extra careful not to redline my car from stone cold.

3m16.229161s

or 4.61928181819 miles

Rubbish. My average speed would be no where near 84.7448691mph.

Mods, feel free to lock. :)
