Quick question on replacing a generator cover

Hopefully a quick question - do I need to use silicone sealant on the new gasket when I am replacing the generator cover? I know I need to use it on the gromit the wires run through, but there seems to be conflicting information on sealing the gasket itself.

Is this a bike specific thing? If so, does anyone know if a ZX6R F3 97 needs sealant? Is it likely to be a problem if I use it and its not called for?

You don't need to, but a small amount wouldn't hurt, plus it helps hold the gasket in place whilst reinstalling the cover. If it's a rubber gasket then it doesn't need sealer, just both mating faces to be clean and free of oil.

I wouldn't use silicone anywhere that a paper/card gasket is involved (and I avoid it everywhere else unless the manufacturer suggests its use). You can use a non-setting sealant such as blue Hylomar if the gasket surfaces are less than perfect, otherwise just a thin smear of grease on either side is perfectly adequate.

You shouldn't need sealant anyway - That's what the gasket is for, surely?
When I got my latest bike, the previous owner had used a sillicon Quick-Gasket type thing and I had to spend an hour picking and scraping this half melted orangey-black crap off the surfaces, before reinstalling with a proper OEM gasket.

Take it off. Every panels damaged now and I quite like the streetfighter look anyway. Next job is to find someone breaking a z1000 or a GSXR so I can nab a headlight :)
