Quick question on weightlifting...

I just didn't want to do a workout when I'm still trying to digest my breakfast, and didn't want to risk lifting on an empty stomach. Another thing is just to have 3 scrambled eggs and take a carb/protein shake with me for PWO :)

If you have a relatively small amount of food at least 1 hour before you go into the gym you will be fine. Don't have a huge breakfast but something enough to give you some energy and keep you going. Then just make sure you take a shake with you.

Then I would be extremely suprised if you're getting enough protein in a day.
Otherwise the sheer volume of meat etc you would be eating would be huge.

There are reasons pro BB still use shakes multiple times a day, and that's to supplement their diet so they take in the correct amount of protein.

I prefer eating meat to drinking protein shakes :)

I don't measure the protein i consume but i'd guess it's anywhere between 150-200 grams spread throughout the day. I don't kid myself that eating more than this will make me any grow faster.

You have to remember that your body will only use so much protein for tissue repair, the rest will be converted to carbs. If these carbs are not used for energy they will be stored as fat.

I believe that protein requirements for body building are grossly exagerated on the internet/magazines or the "experts" down at the gym. Not to mention that too much protein will put an extra burden on the liver and kidneys.

I'm up at 5:30am and in the gym by 6:45am, 3 times a week. My start for the day is one avocado, 2 bananas, a tub of natural yoghurt with a squeeze lemon, whacked in the blender.

Protein comes post workout and involves a bowl of oats and a couple of eggs on toast, yes toast.

Just a little update - today was my first morning work-out. Went quite well, had toast and a few dates - there was nothing to eat at home :(

Still managed to do -

Deadlifts - 3 x 8
Widegrip pulldowns - 3 x 8
BB Rows - 3 x 6
Close grip pulldowns - 3 x 8
Bicep curls - 2 x 8 (couldn't do the last set :o )

for some reason I threw in bench press at 3 x 8 too, not bothered as I wont be doing chest for a few days anyway.

Had a whey/oat/flax powder shake PWO.

I think you'll find most pro bodybuilders eat more whole food. I doubt they have many shakes apart from post workout.

Also there's nothing wrong with toast/bread as a carb source.

There is when you got nothing to put on it :(

Hopefully next time I'll be able to have 1 or 2 boiled eggs before I go.

As Chong says, there's no sustitute for real food.

There seems to be a big dependency on protein drinks around here, thats fine, but if you eat correctly, i've found there really is no need for them :)

Couldn't agree more, reading the first few replies to this thread it's like some of you have forgotten what the word supplement means... ;)

You often hear of people speaking of protein shakes and creatine giving massive gains but it's purely down to incorrect diet in the first place.
