Just a quick one, that I seem unable to find a definitive answer for. Which (if not all) phenoms (I and II, tri and quad) are Hyper-V (Microsoft virtualization technology) compatible?

I just assumed it was like the Core 2 Duo's (and Pentium Dual Cores) where not all processors have the relevant microarchitecture?

All Pheonoms support virtualization (not just hyper-V), its only Intel that removed it from some of there chips. (99% sure of this)

Also AMD chips work better then Intel chips for virtualization purposes due to the arutecture. Not sure the exact numbers, but its one of the few advantages servers have by not going the intel route.

Last question I promise:

What is the quietest (air) cooler that will fit the AM2+ socket (I'm really out of touch with AMD)?

I support 200+ virtual servers at work running a mix of red hat, windows 2k3, 2k8 and VMware really is the best bet.

The new version of the free VMserver is an excellent package that really is basically the full fat enterprise ESX product.

In short id urge you towards VM Server and not Hyper V...Hyper V is years behind.

I'd agree wholeheartedly, if this were a production environment. I am at present rolling out ESX (infrastructure 3, not the free product) at work, but at home, I also want to be able to use the machine itself as the console, so Hyper-V it is.

VMWare Server 2 is bobbins when running on a Microsoft Server OS.

Plus, I also need to test out Server 2008 R2 Hyper-V Core.

I have no problems with using VM server on my pc and still using the box as the console and to surf the web etc it just integrates into windows...

i have little script that stops the services so when i play games i dont have VMware loaded.

not tried 2008 r2 hyper-v core although im sure i will be forced to!

Depending on your preference the noctua nh-u12p and noctua nh-c12p are great quiet coolers.

there are some decent reviews here by mishima on this forum HERE and HERE

Fairly pricy but worth it as a 'buy once' solution! :)

Alternatively i'd also consider Scythe or Thermalright coolers too.
