Quick Question - Step up?

Bumpage.

I swear I don't go out looking for these MK4 Golfs, the 'opportunity' just sort of comes up. I'm sure you know what I did to my Focus on new year's day. This Golf has come up which looks kind of cheap that I can batter for a runaround.

BBS 2 Piece alloys, - Continental Tyres , Air conditioning, six CD changer, Two owners from new, Last owner 5 years, MOT'd Until Jan 2011. ₤2599
He said there was no tax on the car which I could probably use to get more money off.

Now I know the opinion is that these engines are terrible, but I have no car now so it can't be a step down could it?

I guess what I'm asking, is if it is a fair price?

2002, 51 plate - Mark 4 I think? I'll get pictures up if I can work out how to upload to my FTP from my phone :)

I paid £3500 for my 53 plate Focus 1.6, though that was a special edition with heated leather seats.

Got any tips on how to haggle and bargain for me? :)
I'm going to have a look at it possibly this weekend.

He said that he has a whole bunch of receipts and stuff. I could check that with him though. I'm trying to get someone to HPI this for me so I'll let you know as soon as I can.

I'd expect it to have a whole box of receipts and impeccable service history as it's only a 2 ownered car, with the last owning it for 5 years!

"£2k tops" is rubbish. Sure the 2.0GTI Mk4 is rubbish, but i think it's "worth" about £3.5-3.7k

If it's had the cambelt changed, not written off and got millions of receipts, it seems like a suspiciously good deal.

Also, ask him for the V5C number so you can track the MOT history (this is probably the best tool for finding a dodgy car after the HPI check)

My friend's dad is a mechanic and he changed my Focus cambelt for £60 quid. I'm sure he would do me a favour again if we had to.

two summers ago i went out with a friend to buy a mk4 1.8t, 2001, 115k miles, vw service history, 2 owner, 3 dr, black leather recaro, winter pack etc that was £2700 a long time ago

they can be advertised for whatever they want, the price they sell at is a different matter

Whilst this is a lovely one liner that OcUK seem to love throwing around, it doesn't hold much water in this instance. If you see an E46 M3 for £36,000 (like in the other thread) and try and claim that E46 M3's are worth £36,000 - sure, then your statement works.

But when there are 23523 Mk4 Golf 2.0 GTI's, in worse condition, more owners, more miles, all priced above what the OP is being asked to pay - your statement doesn't mean jack....all.

You know, I'm not too bothered about the GTi badge. I know that this badge isn't worthy on these models. I'm more interested if I can get a better 'car' for the same price.

I could possibly live with another Focus. I got on well with my old one, but a lot of the ones I see around this price bracket are much older (not too arsed about the milage) and possibly more likely to be tatty. What's ESP?

To be fair, in this instance i'd probably just get the Golf. On the surface, it seems to be a good little honest car at a thoroughly decent price. I've looked through the PH classifieds and haven't really found another 2.0GTI with as much going for it as this one.

FWIW, if you were to stumble across an identical 2.0/1.6 Focus i'd have that over the Golf, but the chances are slim.

It's just a 2.0 Focus Zetec with ESP (Electronic Stability Program) but obviously they decided it was such a major feature on a Focus, it ended up on the model designation.
