Would a 51 plate Golf GTI be a step up from my current 53 plate Ford Focus 'Ink' (Basically a Zetec with heated seats)?

Golf has 70k miles on it and the bloke is the only owner, and he's asking £3100.
My Focus is Cat D and done 25k miles.

Doh, I'm a dummy!
Golf - 2 litre, 115, Petrol, Manual, 99-03
Focus - 1.6, dunno the power, Petrol, Manual

The reason I ask is that it would only cost an extra 200 quid to insure and I'm slightly bored of the Focus. It would be my second car since passing last November but if it isn't worth it then I'll tell the guy I'm not interested :)

Cheers for your help.

No, it doesn't seem worth it. I was looking at other cars like the MX5 but my belly hits the steering wheel on that :)

Bumpage.

I swear I don't go out looking for these MK4 Golfs, the 'opportunity' just sort of comes up. I'm sure you know what I did to my Focus on new year's day. This Golf has come up which looks kind of cheap that I can batter for a runaround.

He said there was no tax on the car which I could probably use to get more money off.

Now I know the opinion is that these engines are terrible, but I have no car now so it can't be a step down could it?

I guess what I'm asking, is if it is a fair price?

2002, 51 plate - Mark 4 I think? I'll get pictures up if I can work out how to upload to my FTP from my phone :)

I paid £3500 for my 53 plate Focus 1.6, though that was a special edition with heated leather seats.

Got any tips on how to haggle and bargain for me? :)
I'm going to have a look at it possibly this weekend.

He said that he has a whole bunch of receipts and stuff. I could check that with him though. I'm trying to get someone to HPI this for me so I'll let you know as soon as I can.

My friend's dad is a mechanic and he changed my Focus cambelt for £60 quid. I'm sure he would do me a favour again if we had to.

You know, I'm not too bothered about the GTi badge. I know that this badge isn't worthy on these models. I'm more interested if I can get a better 'car' for the same price.

I could possibly live with another Focus. I got on well with my old one, but a lot of the ones I see around this price bracket are much older (not too arsed about the milage) and possibly more likely to be tatty. What's ESP?

There's the LCR that someone got here for around the same price! Looks tidy to me.
This Golf is worth a look though. I'll let you know how I get on!

You know I'm not actively looking for a car. I'm only interested because this one popped up in my face. I reckon it's worth having a car anyway, if only to build my no claims for when I want to get a nicer car in future.

Oops, yeah. The pictures don't load for me at work but it is a bit mediocre. Not excellent, not horrible.

Are you guys saying it's not that terrible? I must admit I got second thoughts about buying this car and started looking for the 1.8Ts. I notice that those models are more expensive, older, more milage and higher insurance group.

I do have money to spend if I needed to, but I'd rather not. I'm not even fussed about having/looking for a car. I like it better when someone offers me stuff!

I would love one of those 330ci that a few of guys here have got, but I'm not spending £2500 on insurance every year and 3 litres is probably a bad idea for most mainly town driving :)

Going from 100bhp to 115bhp isn't going to any different to drive if you're 'bored' with the Focus. At least go for the 1.8T engine.
Ahhhhh, I think this might be the problem. People might still think I have my Focus and don't see why I should change. My Ford is gone dude; I smashed it up on 1/1/10 :)

Mrghm. Is this still a good price if he is refusing to include tax in the price? That's going to be an extra £200 or so?

I bought the car! It feels really good, much better than the Focus even though it has triple the milage. My mechanic friend didn't try to get money off him as it was decently priced already. Cosmetically, the alloys were eaten to crap and there is a small scrape on the lip of the boot. Inside is really clean and the lights work. Need to get it taxed today, that will be £215.

The last service was about 5000 miles ago which I don't even do in a year. It mentions the "pump" and "belt" being done. Would that be the water pump and timing belt? The guy didn't really know because it wasn't really his car. It was a car that he took in PX for another. My friend said that it was most likely both done at the same time if you're digging that deep into the engine? I wish I knew more about cars.
