Would using a Western Digital Raptor 36GB for booting and apps with a external HD for data be better than using one large drive or two in RAID0?

What do you mainly use your PC for? The question is a bit too general as it stands, for some uses the Raptor will be much faster but in other circumstances you might be better with either a large hard drive or Raid0 although that offers more risk of data failure.

For video encoding then you may benefit from Raid0 due to the improved read/write speeds however as I mentioned you don't have any form of redundancy so you are at a greater loss of data risk.

Gaming may also show a bit of a benefit but the Raptor would probably be quicker due to faster seek times I'd suspect.
