i currently have 3x320gb sata drives in raid 5 plus a 750gb sata for my OS. the raid however died with all 3 drives going after a power cut messed them up and there out of warrenty .

new setup i have a spare 320gb laying around which i have decided to use the OS on as its smaller then that would allow me to use my 750gb in my icybox for when i go to visit friends in the new year. i also have two more 500gb drives which will make up a new raid for the time being until i get some money to upgrade them. my question is the data i need of my 750 is about 450gb of data. can i install the raid first, copy the data over format the current os disk then create a fresh install of windows on the 320gb disc without losing any data on the raid or the raid not loading up?

please note i have no more discs to use to backup the current 450gb of data.

It should be possible without too much trouble. I think the lack of response may be because your question is quite convaluted. If it were me I would remove all drives from your system, install the 320 and load up your OS, then add your two 500GB drives in RAID 1( if you are worried about data loss) Install your 750GB in the icybox (I am assuming this a NAS or USB hard drive case) then copy your data back to your new raid drives. It is very likely that a single OS drive will be readable in a USB caddy, less so in a NAS box. Worse comes to worse and you can't 'see' it whilst in the caddy, reinstall it in your system and then copy your data directly.

Hope that this helps
