Hi,

My old thread got deleted. So i'll keep this short, and please don't delete this one.

melbourne720 (if you read this), thanks for list of parts for the recommended system that you posted in the old thread. But it is gone now. Can you please post it again? I'm specifically trying to remember which motherboard. thanks

To anyone else that wants to contribute, i'm trying to get a gaming system together for about £600 (no speakers, keyboard/mouse, dvd drives or monitor needed)

Thanks in advance

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC) - £135.11

Asus P5N-E SLi nForce 650 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard - £82.24

NEC AD5170 18x18 DVD±RW Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - OEM - £19.96

Antec SLK3000B Midi Tower Case - No PSU - £34.06

Corsair HX 520W ATX2.2 Modular SLI Compliant PSU (CMPSU-520HXUK) - £72.84

Intel Core 2 DUO E4300 "LGA775 Allendale" 1.80GHz (800FSB) - Retail - £112.79

Connect3D ATI Radeon X1950 XT 256MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail - £162.14

Total = £619.14

EDIT: Damn, forgot a hard drive and put a DVD drive in :o Take the NEC off and put a Seagate 250GB SATA 7200.10 drive in and that should take it to £654.39 :)

Thanks, just a read a quick review on that gfx card and it was said to have a noisy fan.

Are there any silent PCI-E cards that you could recommend within my budget?

Cheers

Is this one any good?

HIS ATI Radeon X1950 Pro ICEQ 3 TURBO SILENT Heatpipe 512MB GDDR3 TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail

Well I put that one in because it was the XT version rather than the Pro which should be better but it's up to you :) The other one you suggested looks fine but if you are going to go for the Pro version then I'd go for a power colour over the HIS card such as this one: PowerColor ATI Radeon X1950 Pro Extreme SILENT Heatpipe 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail

Cool! Thanks!

I might want to use crossfire in the future. It says the motherboard supports SLi, but there is no mention of crossfire. Can it do both, or do i need a different motherboard?

Thanks for the quick replies.

No, it's SLi only I think. The P5N-E SLi is a very good board but if you want crossfire support then you're going to have to pay a bit more I think. Something like the Gigabyte DS4 will be your best bet :) Crossfire and SLi are a waste of money in my opinion though but that's just me- I prefer to have one decent card rather than two mid-range cards :) I'm not really up to date on Crossfire but I seem to remember that you have to have both a master card and a slave card for it to work, so that would mean a more expensive card as well :(

Sorry to here that, and apologies for my lateness :) .

Motherboard wise, I'm think Asus P5N 650 SLi as has been suggested. DS3 and P5B are both excellent alternatives.

Case - up to you. Akasa eclipse and anything by Lian-Li is recommended.

I'd go for an x1950 Pro - no point in spending more on a DX9 card. Get the connect 3d one, in a decent case that shouldn't be too noisy.

Thanks for that list. I forgot to mention that I already have a case and PSU so that puts it to £500 which is great! :)

Quick question regarding the scythe CPU cooler. I'm buying the CPU retail so I assume it comes with a cooler. What advantages does the scythe cooler have? Bear in mind that I dont overclock anything. Will it reduce noise significantly? Is it easy to install?

Cheers

It's main advantages is that it will take heat more effectively from the CPU than the stock HSF. So you can either have more cooling for the same noise, or the same cooling for less noise. Given you've said you don't want to overclock, then the later would be applicable. I would recommend you reconsidering not overclocking though ;)

System is up and running :) That cooler you recommended is massive. I'm a bit worried if it's working because the fan is mounted on the side and i'm not sure if the air is getting to the CPU.

is an idle CPU temperature of 40 degrees C ok?

Also, i'm not sure if I have the memory in dual channel mode. In the manual it says:

"For dual-channel configuration, the total size of memory module(s) installed per channel must be the same (DIMM_A1 + DIMM_A2 = DIMM_b1 + DIMM_B2)"

At the moment i have them both in DIMM_A1 and DIMM_A2, which are right next to each other. is this right?

Cheers
