Ok, here's the scenario, two lanes on approach to a roundabout, first exit is straight across, second exit is off to the right.

Is it acceptable to be in the left hand lane on approach when wanting to take the second exit ?

ta muchly

Well if you are approaching at 6 o'clock and the first exit is at 12, and second is at 3 then I personally would be in the right lane for the second exit, as would probably most people. Not worth taking chances on roundabouts with so many people not having a clue about lanes at all, and the overall lack of use of indicators.

If you are behind a yellow Skoda Fabia doing 25mph and the roundabout is clear, then the left lane is fine.

Ok thanks, so we've established it should be the right hand lane if you need to take the second exit.

So what about if you want to take the first exit, ie 12:00. Can you be in the right hand lane on approach ?

Here's a pic of the roundabout concerned. Approaching from the right hand side where the lorry is..

judging from the pic you should be in left lane for the road ahead. Although technically if the sign before that entrance shows the road ahead as beyond 12 o'clock then the right lane is correct. What is th apparent exit at 9 o'clock?

I have exactly the same problem at the M3-J9 (Winnall roundabout). I use both right and left lanes (depending on traffic) to go straight ahead (towards Winnall) as there are 2 exits on its exit. However, I have to look very carefully as there are sometimes vehicles to my left lane who want to "cut across" to get the 2pm exit (A34).

ta...it's blocked off..

Ok so I should fess up here, I'm in the right hand lane needing to take first exit, slightly behind this other fellah in the left hand lane, he decides last minute that he needs the second exit and cuts in front of me without indicating. I slam on the anchors but catch him on the rear quarter.

He says it's my fault for not stopping and he is in his rights to be in the left lane and turning right.

Although as you guys say I'm probably ok in terms of lanes but the fact that I effectively drove into him even though he cut across me and I was lucky not to t-bone him I'm wondering if it'll go knock for knock :(

No witnesses either

My dad had something similar happen to him on his bike, it went all the way to court with the person who tried to cut across adamant they were right and refusing to admit liability.

She stood up in court and started off her statement with 'I haven't read my highway code for a few years but...'

Needless to say, the court saw in favour of my dad.
