Hi all,

I am thinking of getting a NAS which will be in the sitting room - so quiet is very important.

I am looking at storing 4k/1080p movies on it and downloading torrents on it. I don't think I need transcoding as my LG B7 OLED TV does that already.

I wont be using it 24/7 so hopefully it will auto-sleep? Is this possible?
I think it would use DLNA networking to share media?

Any ideas what to get?

Cheers

Synology DS418play is the sweet spot for power home user streaming 4K. It's a 4 bay NAS though but they do a 2 bay with just the one fan. By default the fans are set to quiet mode.

Cheers Cyber - but according to bledd having hard drives in my sitting room (which is quiet if the telly isn't on) would be not acceptable :/ I wanted the NAS next to the router which is in the sitting room..... Is there a way to quieten these things down?

Depends where your router is. I've always had mine in my living room - my last flat it was close to the TV, in my current place it's on the bottom shelf of a storage unit behind my sofa, I never notice it. The Synology ones are very quiet as are WD Red drives, and mine is set to turn the fan off entirely when the drives are spun down so it's silent then.

The router is in the corner of the sitting room next to the sofa.... was thinking I could stick it in a small cupboard in the corner - or would that make it too hot as it needs ventilation?

Make sure to use proper NAS HDDs and the WD Reds being 5400RPM are particularly quiet in my TS-453B. They have mechanisms to reduce vibrations.

If you're not connecting directly to a TV for example via HDMI then something like the Synology DS218+/418+ are worth a look. I'm using a QNAP 453B but it's quite pricey and connects directly to my LG TV and runs Kodi/Plex natively though I've also used the Plex app on the LG TV as well via DNLA.

There's a geezer on YT that reviews a lot of the NAS units and does comparisons but I can't name hi as he works for a competitor so you'll have to have a look yourself.

My QNAP does go into standby but's it's not quite as straight forward as I thought it would be as apps like Plex or even just the time server will keep waking up the NAS to check online. I've got mine setup now so it only very occasionally comes out of standby on it's own and now I'm using NAS HDDs I don't notice it spin up.

Check on the supports forums for issues relating to standby modes. Maybe Synology, Asustor etc. are better than QNAP.

Most units have a fan so long as they draw some fresh air they should be OK. Slower NAS HDDs will produce less heat. Less cores/RAM will also affect that.

You can monitor the temps from the NAS OS but I'd personally want it to have at least some ventilation. Honestly though, unless you're sitting there in complete silence you probably won't ever notice it, if it's a two-bay unit at least.

Synology publish the db levels of their Nas's on their website.

Most of the current models are at or below 20db. If you have anything else already in your living room that uses a fan it likely to be noisier.

I reccently bought a DS418 and am very happy with its noise levels. Mine is in an open back but closed front TV cupboard and HD's are reporting no problems with temps.

I agree WD Reds are excellent and i can only notice HD noise if doing something like rebuilding the array transferring large backup not when playing back media.

They will put the drives to sleep if its not being used.

DLNA might be your only option for finding the drive from a TV but a better method for accessing your UHD material is a mount like NFS as it tends to be faster .
