quietest case available

With that budget I always recommend the Haf 922, it has so many good reviews, has big fans (can take more airflow so doesn't need to spin as fast which makes it quieter) and plenty of space inside. You can get a windowed or none windowed version too. Other than that though the better cases are the Fractal r2, lancool dragonlord k62 (currently on sale too) and the NZXT Lexa Blackline Midi Tower Case in my opinion.

edit/ you've already decided it seems :p

i like the design of the fractal but its a bit deeper than i want, is there anything similar that also holds 8 hdds but preferably less than 50cm deep?

You want to be staying away from aluminium cases if you are running 8 hard drives, the vibration will be horrific under 8.
Antec P183 is the case for you.

um i quite like the lian li pc-a17

can't i just use anti vibration kits if the noise proves too much? i won't be using 8 immediately, im just leaving room for upgrading, want to add ssd later and more hdd space as needed.

:)

Usually from hdd's or over the top speedy fans or faulty fans or when a cd is being read and can create an annoying resonance of vibrations going through the entire case and is pretty common with thin sheet metal cases, which is where either thicker metal or accoustic dampening material or both come in to play to deaden annoying vibrations.

My point was that none of those things are actually the case

Using an SSD for the OS keeps things very quiet. I have afew games on the SSD, the ones that I think access the drive most often (WoW, RPGs in general).

Things like TF2 go on the raid array and when I am gaming I don't hear the hard drives anyway, not that they are that loud to begin with.

steer clear of anti vibration kits they do not work, what I do is suspend my hard drives in the 5'25 bay with sewing machine elastic.
