Evening, I'm looking for the quietest case I can reasonably get without affecting cooling too much. Here's a poor quality pic of what I have at the moment.

It's an icute case and I bought it for about £20 years ago when I was on a very tight budget for my first PC build. It's been fine but I'm starting to get bored of the lack of noise insulation - I want to work on my computer in peace :p. I upgraded all the chassis fans and changed the fan on the GPU which helped, but it's still noisy.

Specs are:

  • Xilence 600W Gaming Edition PSU
  • Q6600 with Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro
  • 8800GT with aftermarket Zalman heatsink/fan
  • 4GB Patriot Memory PC2-6400 (4x 1GB sticks)
  • Gigabyte EP35C-DS3R mobo
  • PCI TV Card
  • 3x Xilence 80mm chassis fans

I don't want to spend any more than £100. I've been looking at Fractal Design Define R3 but annoyingly the door opens the wrong way.

Could somebody recommend me a case?

However, if the door is not a necessity I would recommend one of these,

Plenty of fans for cooling that you can change if you want, lots of space for great airflow

Good quality case..........

Good for cooling, of course. Good for silence? Not at all.

At the moment, my choice for silence would be the Fractal R3. You won't get quite as low temps as some similarly priced cases, like the 902 or the HAF series from Cooler Master, but you do get a quality, sound insulated case that still provides decent cooling

didn't see this, lol!! i've just started an almost identical thread, as i have been looking at the fractal cases. it is my understanding that the antec 900 series are quite loud, but do they come with a fan controller?

I watched a youtube review for the fractal last week and i think he said you can change the door to open the other way.

Hmm, could you dig out the youtube video? I can't find anything that says you can change the hinge to open the other way.

but you do get a quality, sound insulated case that still provides decent cooling

That's all I need

Btw, I should point out, I really would like a window but I assume they make things louder?

The "Performance One" range that Antec does (and I suspect Fractal had a good look at before doing their range) is quiet and airy if you want it to be but again has a door that swings from right to left.

The assumption seems to be that people have their computers on their left.

I have my PC on the left - though that's because I have an FT02 and the side window is on the right (from the front). Otherwise I'd agree the design decision doesn't make sense to me.

Anyway, if you can stretch a bit, the RV02 would be a good option - large controllable fans, sturdy case and a side window, plus it's quiet.

They are £135 for the new E model though. I guess you might be able to find the outgoing model cheaper somewhere though (still an RV02, but with worse fans).

Tbh having the computer on the left does make sense if you look at it from this point of view:

The keyboard and mouse are often on the same level as the computer.

Most people are right handed.

The keyboard is likely to just sit there while the mouse may well be waved about, requiring extra room.

Therefore the best place to put the computer tower to avoid getting in the way is the left side.

Thus, door opens right to left.

I have the antec darkfleet DF10 bought from ocuk. It's a great case for the price and the fans come with a low/high speed switch, they're silent on low and you can vaguely hear them when set to high
