I have a QX6700 quad core CPU and thinking I should sell it now and get a good price (£450-500) or just hold onto it. Is it true that theses CPU's are coming down in price over the next few months and a new True quad core CPU is coming out.

Yes, it might be a good idea to sell it now while it is still worth a lot. After the price cuts on the 22nd, it will be worth a lot less, so it makes sense to sell it now, if thats what you want to do. Then you can pick up a cheap Penryn quad core, when they're released in the coming months.

On the flip side, the whole markplace should (assuming they keep an eye on tech news) also be waiting for the prices to drop in seven weeks' time, so you may already have lost out. Something else to consider is the presence of the Q6600, which basically nullifies the QX6700 in spectacular fashion as well as weighing in below £350... disregarding the Xeon 3220 @ £295 or whatever.

I certainly I wouldn't pay that much for your processor at this point, but I am positive there are other people out there who would.

You stand to lose less by selling now, yes, but then in my opinion, I don't know why you'd want to upgrade in the first place... an upgrade to Penryn might give you a nice, new case badge and probably some other cost (DDR3, perhaps? I don't know) and net you all of no noticeable difference when it comes to anything other than hardcore rendering/graphics packages.

The accountant in me would advise you to sell now. The person who pays his own bills asks why bother?

You still have it?

Be quick and do the easyrider shuffle at once :D

Get a 2160 for 50 clock it to 3.2ghz and wait for penryn :)

Sell it, sell it fast. I sold my Q6600 & nicked the E6600 out of the Mrs Rig.

well i've stuck it on the auction site and will get a a E6320 for the time being as i've seen one on there for £90 so it should do me for now, unless anyone has another idea for a chip i should get :p

2160

I don't really see much point in selling. I'm a QX6700 owner too and I've researched about the Penryn quads. There will be hardly any difference because the actual achitecture of the chip is very much the same, just with the 4 cores on a single die. Performance increase percentage wise will be in the single digits in most real world circumstances. I'd think very carefully because you may even loose some performance if you intend to go for a cheaper Penryn. I'm not saying I'm right, it's just my view :)

i agree, 2 weeks ago i bought the Q6700 and it is an awesome chip.

Even if you sell it now your going to make a loss. OK so it might run a little hotter than the 45n ones but ive got a tunig tower cooler and oc'd to 3gig it rarely goes ove 40 degrees.

Keep it, make the most of it and only change it if they bring out one that is way way faster.

Yes, wait for Nehalem due next year. It's a completely new microarchitecture that will have upto 8 cores and simultaneous multithreading support for up to 16 or more threads. Those chips will DEFFINETLY boost performance a lot :) And think about it, you havn't even seen the true power of the current quads yet, we're still waiting for games that make use of them :) They will be here soon

I dont understand how people are getting these temps?

Ive got the Q6600 with Tuniq and at stock it is 56c. Stress it and it hits 65c....cant even think about overclocking it or it goes into the late 70's early 80's

This is my 3rd cooler (after Scythe and GeminII) and they were all the same, so its not a case of re-seating or not enough thermal paste, and my case is very well ventilated.

It's hacked me off to the point where its now on the bay and I'm going back to E6600

i should point out that I have 4 120mm fans on the side of my case blowing in.
a 120mm and 2 80mm at the back blowing out.
fan on the tuniq at full pelt all the time

I used to spread my thermal paste all over the chip, but now i put a small blob in the middle, put the heatsink on nice and tight, and off i go.

Im now using lavasys EVEREST to monitor my temps, core1 is at 43, cores 2, 3, 4 are at 38 idle
