hi guys i have the Asus P6X58D-E Intel X58 (Socket 1366) DDR3 Motherboard
with 6slots for RAM, with 6gb ram installed, so was thinking another 3x2gb sticks and i have 12gb, but my question is, does the new RAM sticks have to match the ones already in the motherboard exactly or can it be different?

thanks in advance

I dont think they do have to be the same make, but I think they have to be the same speed. What do you need 12Gb of RAM for anyway? Do you do video editing or 3D modelling or something?

yea i do 3d modelling and video editing, currently studying final year at university and in a few months time will rendering out some seriously heavy 3d models, its not like i really need the 12gb but if it seriously cuts down my render times then thats more time to make it look pretty.

oh yea another question if anybody would know. would the extra RAM make a big difference for rendering and video editing. i figure it will, obviously more is better, but just want to know if anyone knows by how big a difference?.

++ im running core i7 950 oc to 4ghz would 12gb ram affect that?

thanks again

from what I hear, (large) overclock + all slots filled = dead memory controller in many cases.
if you want 12gb, it would be advisable to buy a 12gb (3x4gb) kit, then sell your old stuff.
Either that or decide which is most important to you: clockspeed or masses of ram.
I'd imagine a small overclock would still be possible with all slots filled, but you may have to run @ 1333 or below, or loosen timings a lot.

this kit is only £115 at the moment, so once you sell you old kit then its an £70-80 upgrade at worst, probably more like £50-60

I have never heard that before, so cant back it up or dispute it really. I had heard from someone that having all the RAM slots filled improved performance slightly as all lanes were saturated with available memory.

I suppose it depends on what you call a 'large' overclock.
