I think any air cooled high end card would be harder to keep temps down in a smaller case. Would need very good airflow set up.

Yeah, my case has quite a good air flow with 2 120s at the front and 1 120 at the back. Plus there's not meny cables in the air flows path.

It does have a pretty restrictive front panel though.

I was thinking I could go for a nvidia card the same speed as the 290, but nvidia has less memory and for 3 or 4gb of memory, its quite a bit more expensive then amd?

I went from a 7970 to a 290 and noticed a slight performance increase.

I think i may need to see a 'real life' picture of Petey. All i have currently are vague and slightly unpleasant images based on the fact i bought that 'beefcake' gpu cooler off you which smelt of cigarette smoke. There must be more to you thank bulging biceps and superkings.
