R9 290X Owners Thread

Does anyone else have a Gigabyte Windforce R9 290X?

I have mine in an Aerocool DS case and though I think it has some good airflow, this card very very easily gets up to 94c.

94c is the limit this card goes and when it gets here it starts to throttle core clock speeds. Even without my MSI Afterburner profile the fan goes to 100% and is unable to keep it under 94c though this is testing on Metro Last Light which seems like a 'hot' game.

Anyone else finding this with their card?

Sounds like your card is faulty, possibly bad contact between cooler and die. There's no way it should be throttling at 100% fan.

That is definitely not normal, I have this card and the highest it should get is 85c at about 40-50% fan speed.

If your fan speed is running at 100% and the card is getting to 94c then it is faulty.

You could try re-fitting the heatsink cooler but then you may invalidate the warranty, so probably best return it.

Hey Guys,

Has anybody been been experiencing a lot of BSOD's (loud buzz and blue screen with no error message) using the latest 14.6 beta ?

I'm a bit concerned at the moment because I have also been getting a few watchdog_clock errors. And of course watch dog errors :)

Cheers.

That's nothing to do with your gpu brotein shake. That means your cpu needs more vcore and lots of it. Add 3 notches of vcore and try again.

Matt, Wazza, thanks guys.

Matt I was hoping you wouldn't say that :) This pc is OC'd by OCUK and I've left the cpu clocking as is because I didn't wanna void any warranty. They OC'd it to 4.7. It's the Infinity Tesseract watercooled system. Would you advise me calling OCUK and doing this under their advice or are they ok with this stuff and warranty issues ?

Try it yourself (if you feel comfortable doing that) and see if fixes the issue. I'll tell you this now, clock watchdog timeout is always cpu vcore. (lack of) :)

esp if anne robinson pops up on screen and winks at you

lol, Matt, that's twice you've helped me out and I can't thank you enough. Yes the VCore setting seems to have worked out. I went up 2 more notches because it had been set one up from the original by ocuk and at the moment things are running stable. Cheers very much ;)

Anyway, staying OT for the thread has anyone got any tips for running that watch dogs game on these cards ?

I've done a few tweaks to the settings, like getting rid of mouse acceleration, which improved things a fair bit but whether I run it on ultra or low settings I get the same awful stuttering gameplay where stuff seems to struggle to load in.

Happy to help mate. :)

I've said it before and ill say it again. A red screen in windows is nothing to do with the gpu.

I just upgraded from a 680 gtx to a XFX r9 290x boost edition and i got it for £300. and i think image quality is a lot better, its like everything is more defined so u see all the details better :D
