R9 290X Owners Thread

Haha! you cracked. Your mileage may vary ;)

Yep, your fault too. :D

Will definitely keep these this time, i really regret sending both back last time when i should have at least kept one. This time I'll house them elsewhere or keep them as spares if they don't clock well. To be fair my three other reference 290X cards are poor clockers, so these must be better than that.

This will take me up to 11 290X/P cards now.

They're a lot of card for the money regardless how good or bad they clock. Although a good clocking one is always a bonus. Will be interesting to see how you get on.

Kinda wish I had enough room for another lightning. 1440p can be a bit tough for one 290x.
Though waiting for the 390x may be more sensible.

You can never have too many, right? :D

True that. Just a lovely designed card to be fair, feels like a real brick.

Just out of curiosity, I wonder if flashing to the original Lightning Bios would reap any rewards when clocking other than a higher stock clock which means jack to me. I know the card itself is physically the same in every way?

Worth a punt, but i bet there is zero difference other than the clock speed. Check the Vga bios collection to see if there is a big difference in the bios revision numbers.

You made the right choice. The 8GB is only going to come in handy in most instances at 4K when you have at least two cards.

I just ordered a couple of 290X MSI Lightning cards myself to play around with. :)

I also just got the 290X MSI Lightning for another build.
out of all the 290's, this card feels so well made and solid.
Pretty heavy card. was worried about it sagging. but it stays solidly straight:D
Just ordered another for crossfire. temps are 64 max on BF4.

I don't normally overclock cards, (only CPU's)but i want to on this one.
Mat shall i just use after burner? any tips on what setting i should change for the over clock? and anything to change for crossfire when the 2nd one comes ;)

Cheers ;)

MSI has just scammed you :D.

As for overclocking, download MSIAB. set voltage to +100mV and powerlimit to +50% and try 1150-1200 on core 1550 on memory to start out :)

Use MSI Afterburner for overclocking, volting and gpu statistics (temp) monitoring. :)
