R9 290X Owners Thread

My 2600K bottlenecked my 290X's at 3440x1440 so I think a 2500K definitely would at 4K.

It will depend on the game, but yes i agree. In the case of Dirt Showdown there was a bottleneck with your setup as the game is not that visually demanding, even at 4K. Thus a lot of emphasis is placed on the cpu in that title and you were only running a small overclock on your chip.

It's not just that I've noticed, haven't been posting much as I've been moving house, but my minimum fps is a lot lot better, especially in games such as BF4 and Alien when it gets busy. Everything is just silky smooth now. Except for SWTOR. :(

4K can actually make things easier for a 2500k

I just run this for a bit of fun using 4 x 290Xs @stock on Firestrike ultra 4K. This is an extreme example as you would never try this with 4 cards on a 2500k system.

In the first run I used my 4930k CPU as it is normally -

6/12 Cores/threads
H/T on
Ram @2400mhz
PCI-E 3.0 used

In the second run I turned things off to get the CPU to run as close to a 2500k as possible -

4/4 Cores/threads
H/T off
Ram @1600mhz
PCI-E 2.0 used

This is what I got (remember we are comparing graphics scores not the overall score).

4930k @4.0ghz as it's self

Graphics Score 10128

4930k @4.0ghz configured as a 2500k

Graphics Score 10056

Im torn between the msi le edition or the vapour x 8gb model. I have a 21:9 3440x1440 monitor, irrespective of price which would be best for me? Does the extra 4gb frame buffer actually give me any benefits for the resoulution i run at? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

Lightning edition it is then! Thanks for that link kappa x

The Lightning can be a potent card which also comes with a great cooler.

You made the right choice. The 8GB is only going to come in handy in most instances at 4K when you have at least two cards.

I just ordered a couple of 290X MSI Lightning cards myself to play around with. :)
