R9 290X Owners Thread

Nice one Zed and Kaap :) Looking forward to some results. I can wait till the custom cooled cards come before getting one and looks like a Dear Santa, please can I have a 290X Chrimbo letter going out :D

So without me having to do a load of benchmark searching can i ask.. is 2x 7950's faster than a 290x?

A 290X at 1200/1500 will match my stock 7950 crossfire, at least in valley.

I'll tell you what a 290X at 1200 core matches my stock 7950 crossfire setup.

Gibbo's 290X @1200/1500 - Valley - 73.1 FPS - Score 3059

That is impressive. :)

I asked for the ASUS in the end. I'm not happy with the way all this has gone down though.

Fair enough the first 150 customers get priority choice. But I was quite annoyed the memory on the other cards were checked but weren't on the MSI as I requested. I was also annoyed how staff told me that MSI were in stock when Gibbo was telling me they hadn't arrived.
I requested MSI or ASUS in the end. This morning I'm told all cards are sold out despite having pre ordered. I'm then told that more ASUS should arrive today. So I have reluctantly gone for that despite the premium.
Hopefully I'll at least get the card tomorrow.

Overall I haven't been happy with the whole process and it has put me off from pre ordering in the future.

As the RAM chips are of a different generation to the ones in the 7970, it does not appear to matter on this gen what ram chips you have as the design and type of chip is different. As long as the voltages are the same (which has been proven that they are slightly higher on the Asus card?) then it appears to be all good.

I cannot prove this at the moment but in all probability, the best BIOS and software for OC will be from Sapphire, as was per the 7970 launch.

The Asus cards might be marketed better and have all the custom bioses in the world but its the Sapphire bios and software which has been the most effective in my usage on the 7970.

It is not all bad news, GPU Tweak I think allows overvolting out of the box so Asus cards will have a temporary advantage until the other overclocking software catches up.
