R9 290X Owners Thread

Yeah same here pal,

Strange thing is though i can benchmark 3dmark 13,11 and all the heavens @1625 no problem, but games cause a black screen.

I'm happy to leave it @1150/1450 for now tbh, performance is incredible.
I only had time to test on Valley and Heaven. Mine would black screen beyond 1550MHz even in these two benches, so you already having better luck than me :D

Hey, I was wondering if there a way to increase the voltage for the memory?

Currently using the unlocked VTX 290x...will get black screen problem/crash when clocking the memory too high.

From reading all i can online and chekcing out the info from the guy who codes the MSI AB app it looks like the new R9 cards dont have the abillity for you to manually set memory voltage as its all done dynamically or differently then before or something but basically you cant do it as far as i can tell.

@uksoldierboy i am in the same boat as you i want to go watercooling but i am not sure i will get much more out of my card if i give it a go and then find out i can only get another 50mhz from my card i will be a little disapointed. I know the other benifits like the noise, everyhting will be cooler and it looks pimp but for the same price i could get another 290x lol but then i will want to water cool them as well its a vicious circle :)

Dude can you push the momory to 1500 it seems to be a sweet spot on my sapphire 290x (flashed with stock asus bios). Might give you a little bit more maybe unless you have tried it and it's a no go then ignore me :)

The 290/X has 1500Mhz rated IC's, to get much over that overvolting will be needed.

Still, with the 512Bit bus they are pushing 384Gbs Memory bandwidth, 394Gbs @ 1550Mhz. which is huge. round it off to 400Gbs @ 1563Mhz, its what i did on mine, only i'm pushing 200Gbs....

Is the memory bandwidth limited by the PCI-E gen or something else ? how do you see you are only pushing 200gbs ? and i wonder why weird i will check mine later to have a look to see what mine does.

Guys, how are you finding these cards now that the drivers have settled a bit?

I'm torn between one of these and a 780ti, but whatever I pick is going to have to last me for a few years. I'm worried about the heat and noise on these and I won't be watercooling. Waiting for 3rd party coolers is also not an option.

Well i can't talk for everyone but i find the 290x to be great once you find a happy point for you regarding noise vs throttling. If you dont mind a little noise then make a custom fan profile that will ensure the card keeps cool but if you want to keep the noise down leave it at stock and it's not very loud over otehr cards i have had but now and again you might get a little throttling but its not massively noticeable unless you are wathcing the FPS counter instead of enjoying the game lol

I also feel like the card has a lot more to give its like driving a ferrari on bad / flat tyres you know if you get better tyres you could really let it rip lol not sure if that makes sense to anyone but its how i feel with regards to the 290x :)

I would just go with an unlocked R9 290. Save your self a few hundred notes over the 780ti and gives same performance as 290X..

Sorry for the stupid question, but is an unlocked 290 identical to a 290x to all intents and purposes?

If the Stream Processors are also unlocked, yes. the difference between the 290 and X is 2560 SP's vs 2816, they are the same GPU but with 256 SP's disabled on the 290, unlocking simply re-enables them.

OcUK sell voltage unlocked 290's and SP Unlocked 290's, make sure you get the right one :)

Here's the latest Asus volt control bios - http://www.megafileupload.com/en/file/472894/--290X-rar.html - http://www.speedyshare.com/dxeC4/Latest-ASUS-Bios-Volt-Control-290X.rar - http://www.sendspace.com/file/3c50wq

Nice clocks with this bios, although I do get some artifacts past 1200mhz..
