Hi all,

I've recently got a new Strix R9 390 and installed it in my machine and am unable to get a signal out of it. When I boot with it connected the monitor just goes to sleep, I don't see the BIOS or anything

The machine it's running in :
- P8P67 mobo (The internet told me it was compatible :D)
- 1000W corsair PSU in it.
- Windows 7

The machine previously contained an Nvidia card (Also PCIE) and if I put that back in it runs fine.

What I've tried so far :
- The GFX card has been RMA'd and returned as working (confirmed on DP and HDMI)
- Updated BIOS to latest revision (Version 3602)
- Reset the CMOS
- Tried both my monitors (DVI-D to DVI-D, they work with the old card)
- Tried monitors with HDMI to DVI-D cable
- Tried plugging into my TV (HDMI to HDMI)
- Tried plugging into my TV with VI-D to HDMI cable
- Unistalled all the old drivers
- Booted up with both my new and old GFX card in and connected to the old GFX card and am unable to detect the new card in windows.
- Re-seating the card (All 3 PCIE slots)
- Both the modular and the static lines off the PSU (One or the other not a combination of half and half :))

On powering the machine the graphics card power connector lights come on and the logo light steadily pulses. I suspect that it's actually booting all the way through to windows as the machine keeps running happily and if I leave it a while then shut it down using the power button and switch back to the old card to reboot I get the "Windows was not shutdown correctly" screen.

I'm about out of ideas of what to try next and welcome all suggestions.

Thanks,
Patrick

Sounds like the card might not be getting enough juice, both additional power connectors plugged in and secure? Using any splitters / cable extensions etc?

Hey,

Both are in and secure using a 6+2 and a 6 - the R9 390 has little lights next to these and they've both gone white. No splitters or anything. Have tried both the static lines from the PSU and the provided modular ones (Not a mix of them as haven't read up whether it's 1 or 2 rails)

Thanks

Did you enable this setting in the BIOS?

I don't remember seeing that option there - looks like that picture is a slightly different EFI BIOS Utility from what mine boots into. Will take a look, what's the option for? If I can find it this evening will try it both ways :)

Have just re-read your picture and not sure if you're talking about VT-d or the Initiate Graphic Adapter - my reply was referring to TV-d

I've tried Initiate Graphic Adapter on each setting it has (Auto/PEG/PCIE)

It's to choose whether it boots using the GPU or built in graphics.

what Nvidia card; as both new Nvidia and AMD cards sometimes needs new bios to run; sounds like you're getting power to is.....or your mb just can't handle newer cards....

remember where you read it would work?

I know this might sound silly is it fully seated? I know I've had issues sometimes seating a card; where I thought it was but it wasn't and did the same thing.

@darwin1859 Ah so you were talking about the Initiate Graphic Adapter - yes have tried that on each option that's possible (The mobo doesn't have an onboard gfx)

@AMDMatt Yes haven't had any issues with it until now although the jury is out as to where the issue is at the moment, I wondered about compatibility after seeing the last update was end of 2012 but all information I can find says they should work fine together

Do you have another system you can put it in to try? That would be the best way to find out if it's the card or an incompatibility issue with your system.

@meldarthx Will double check when I get home but the old card was a GeForce GTX (the 570 I think)

I checked a number of "part picker" sites which all seemed to suggest it was fine.

I'm fairly confident it's seated (I've had it in and out a number of times what with having to boot off the old card) - clicks in places nicely etc. double and triple checked it

@AMDMatt I don't have anything at home - am planning to bring it in to work on Monday and have a go on one of the ones here. Since I RMA'd it and it got confirmed working I imagine something somewhere is incompatible or I've missed a setting or similar but not sure how to work out what.

only other thing I can think of; is put new card in; plug into onboard vga and boot into bios and disable onboard - some intel boards sometimes don't play nice with newer cards with onboard video enabled; cards show up blank.

Probably worthwhile having a backup GPU on hand in case this doesn't work. Otherwise will need to reset the BIOS?
