Race Driver: Grid

Great game, and looks very nice on ultra. But my god is the keyboard a horrible awkward difficult interface for driving.

I think this game is ok, graphics are nice, crash engine is nice.

but the car performance seems very canned and just rather lazy, races are kind of boring considering you can just reverse any mistake you make.

Overated and very arcady imo.

I've been playing the GRID demo recently and I can't seem to control the car according to my own liking. I've tried both keyboard and Logitech Driving Force Pro steering wheel and the way the car is controlled is really weird and frustrating at the same time

With the keyboard, the car's steering goes full lock left or right (which I'm guessing the same applies to all racing games when played with a keyboard). I thought the controls would be similar to Need For Speed series however for me, it's unplayable with the keyboard

With the steering wheel, GRID had a preset for the steering wheel which I used and the car accelerates all the time without me touching the accelerator. I couldn't edit the preset so I configured the controls myself and as a result, when the car is accelerating in the game, it doesn't provide full acceleration. Also the car oversteers all the place whilst gently steering the car. The controls in GTR/GTR2 are far easier for me compared to this game

I'm trying to like this game, can anyone please give me any tips on setting up the controls or how to play the game properly please? :p

Get a 360 Pad...Sorted

steering is going to be easier in gtr/gtr2 as thats a proper racing sim and they simulate it properly, in grid its just all oversteer like most arcade driving games are, they have to cater for everyone its either hard left or hard right so even girls can get cars around the corners ;) even useing analogue its still to over steering, shame as its otherwise a good fun pick me up game, hopefully they can fix it with patch.

I've tried changing the stability control assist and its like playing two different games. With the TVR and it off its like driving a brick, with it on you can swing the car all over the place. Its a bit odd not sure which I prefer.

And for the majority of races I have no music but then for a few races there is, is that normal?

Even with the 360 pad I'm struggling with this game. Steering is just about OK, but braking is abysmal. As soon as I even touch the breaks I lock up and go skidding across the road taking out anyone who happens to be near by. :(

Try and brake in a straight line and don't start turning until you are either completely off the brake or at least easing off the break. This should help stop that.

Fiddle with the saturation settings for the brake in the options.

Then stick it on pro mode and savage difficulty and try the le mans!!! Even with only 24 mins it is a real test of endurance! How they do 24 hours for real I don't know  As you increase difficulty you reduce the number of flashbacks available (and pro mode turns them off if I recall correctly)

In my opinion this game is not overated, it has delivered in a time where realism and sorting out how stiff you want the rear suspension to be is normal. I just want to get home from college/work and jump into a Zonda on a race track against 11 other drivers, where we are all driving the same car.

My thoughts about Grid.

Its a beautiful looking game, really nice. Well presented, funky menus and all. In game, the detail is mind blowing. Ok, its covered in a heavy cover of 'realism'. That means there is bloom galore, a sickening amount of motion blur and you view this all with a subtle (read heavy) hint of brown. Ok, I thought, I can over look graphics. That was untill i started to 'race'.

Now I like my driving games. Really like them. Almost love the whole racing genre. It doesnt matter if its an arcade game like Outrun, Trackmania or Re-volt. I love them. Same goes for the sims, like LFS or GPL. Its all the same to me. When I started to race with Grid, I felt that the game didnt really want me to play the way I wanted. Ie, by driving. Let me explane what I mean by this. All driving games need you to control your car by using the accelerator/brake and by turning left and right. All racing games do this, except for Grid. I found out, after a few disasterous races, that all you have to do is hint at the game at each corner, then put your finger back on the throttle. No correcting for slides, no aiming at the apex, nothing. Couple that with a chase camera that is straight out of Hollywood with its constant shaking about (cue tons of motion blur) and you get the feeling this is a game thats trying to make itself look good. Rather than you make the game look good (by good driving).

Overall I regret buying this game. To me there is no connection between me and the car Im supposed to be controlling. It just feels all wrong. Shame really, its a pretty game with some cool little features. But, to me, it feels like this is a bit of a waste. Codemasters, you've failed again.

Id try it again, hardest settings, bumper cam, all assists off and imo you do feel feel in control of the car to some extent, its not a sim though, but you certainly need to aim for apexes, correct slides and use the steering and throttle to battle youre way thru the pack...

I felt very similar to you for the first hour or so on the demo, but, once i got a feel for the game ive grown to enjoy it... My only real problem now is Online racing, ive joined 2 online races, the first i was pushed wide at the first corner into a tyre barrier, wrecking my car... the 2nd i started first and after almost 2 laps in first and pulling away from the pack I was caught out by a wrecker... Im now waiting for the patch will hopefully allow me to join OcUK member hosted races.

Well i think its great, you do have to brake and you do have to ease off, thought is required. For £20 how can folk grumble.

this game is a pure arcade racer it doesnt pretend to be anything else, i put this up there with Daytona and Sega Rally, pick a race bash and barge and get to the finish line, just dont expect any trace of a sim in there .. its absolutely superb

im hoping in a future patch they add more demolition races as thats were the real fun is at, its as good as the old PS1 game
